It doesn't because hell is only the grave. It is not a horrible place. Hell is temporary, for God's Son Jesus is going to resurrect those who are in hell. Revelation tells us that Jesus has the keys to hell, meaning he will open the graves of those who have fallen asleep in death to be reunited with their families and loved ones. [ Revelation 1:18 ]
Revelation 20:13,14 tells us also__" And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
We can see here that hell delivers up its dead and then they are judged. Hell and death are then destroyed forever. This will be a wonderful time--no more death and no more graves.
The Bible tells us that the dead cannot feel anything. " For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing--
Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest."Ecclesiastes 9:5,10
This knowledge brings us closer to the God who gave us life if we know that he does not torture anyone. If someone burned or tortured someone close to you for a long time, how would you feel about that person? Would you respect them or want to be close to them? Satan loves it when the churches of Christendom make God out to be so terrible and sadistic. When the Bible tells us that God is love, that is what it means. The resurrection of those who have fallen asleep in death is a wonderful act of love from a Creator who cares about all of us.
We do not have souls--we are souls; Genesis 2:7__"And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."
Souls (people) are not immortal, souls die__Ezekiel 18:20 : "The soul that sinneth, it shall die-"
Souls eat_Leviticus 7:27: "Whatsoever soul it be that eateth any manner of blood, even that soul shall be cut off from his people."

Very logical question. According to the Bhagavad-gita, which literally means The Song of God: "The soul can never be cut to pieces by any weapon, nor burned by fire, nor moistened by water, nor withered by the wind. This individual soul is unbreakable and insoluble, and can be neither burned nor dried. He is everlasting, present everywhere, unchangebale, immovable and eternally the same." Bg. 2.23-24.

The modern Christian theology of an eternal hell fire is a concoction by materially motivated men who had little sense of real spirituality and practically no real knowledge of the soul. Thus we find contradictions like the one you have pointed out.

The spirit soul, known in Sanskrit as jivatma or jiva, is eternal and no material substance can affect it any way. That is not to say that there is no such manifestation as a "hell". After all, we all know there are hellish conditions everywhere. Who would not characterize being in the midst of a war zone as hellish? And it is certainly hellish to take birth in abject poverty such as experienced in certain places in Africa right now.

However, because the Lord is very merciful, there is no eternal "hell" for the soul. All material conditions are temporary. We change bodies and thus change circumstances from life to life-- sometimes in a higher form such as a human, sometimes lower forms like animals and insects. Sometimes we are relatively happy and sometimes we are in misery. But even though there are innumerable miserable conditions in ths world that the individual soul passes through, the soul does not actually suffer. We "suffer" because we think we are the body and the mind that we ride in. We are so much indentified with the body and mind that we think we are the body and mind. But actually, we are the spirit soul -- forever pure, eternal , full of knowledge and bliss.

And throughout our long duration of imprisonment in this material world, the Lord accompanies the jiva as the Paramatma (Lord in the heart) witnessing everything and just waiting for the individual soul to get completely fed up with this material world. When that happens, the Lord makes arrangements for the jiva to come in contact with His devotee so that he can make further spiritual advancement.

it's an expression. but yes a soul can't literally burn in hell.

however this is a rather amusing interperetation of the extreme heat properties of hell:

The following is an actual question given on a University of Washington chemistry mid-term. The answer by one student was so "profound" that the professor shared it with colleagues, via the internet, which is, of course, why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well.
Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)?
Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant.
One student, however, wrote the following:
First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different Religions that exist in the world today. Most of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell.
With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added.
This gives two possibilities:
1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose.
2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over.
So which is it?
If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa during my Freshman year that, "it will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you, and take into account the fact that I slept with her last night, then number 2 must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already frozen over. The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is therefore, extinct...leaving only Heaven thereby proving the existence of a divine being which explains why, last night, Teresa kept shouting "Oh my God."

there are 2 the right thank you to respond to this. first one might desire to correctly suited the bibilcal utilization of what a soul is, in comparison to the spirit and physique a residing soul is whilst the physique is joined by using the spirit and the physique and spirit become a soul many times this basically happens whilst the fetus breathes hhowever, each and every spirit, pre exists in the previous the physique is born not all fetus or infants are joined to the spirit interior the womb. some spirits can decide for to not be born. yet some that would desire to be born do die in injuries. God says dont kill a newborn interior the womb. such those that do, deserve the death penalty, till it quite is an twist of fate Danion Brinkley suggested that once he died, now and returned teh spirit joins the fetus interior the womb. so sure, now and returned the spirit starts off existence interior the womb. in spite of the shown fact that, i nevertheless think of existence starts off interior the spirit in the previous the fetus is even conceived. and if the fetus is harmed, there can continuously be yet another womb to circulate into. ive heard of a pair of memories the place the newborn that shouldve been born, got here later, even to the comparable mom.

Wow, that's good thinking. I never heard someone who believes in hell come up with that kind of logical thinking.

The reason this does not make sense to you is 1. The soul is the person of you, not some ethereal figure. 2. Hell is not hot. Hell is the grave, the place you rest until you are resurrected.

I believe that the soul is the mind and it's the body's software which only functions wile it's animate with the breath of life. Just like you need hardware and electricity for software to work. Then we die I believe our "software" remains dorman until God resurrects us and only he can because the breath orginiated from him and was passed down to us from Adam (the first man). Satan can maquerade as dead loved ones. When we resurrect, it will either be to eternal life or no life at all (your software is deleted from God's hard drive). Like when you're naughty on cyberspace, your account can be cancelled! Hell comes from heaven and restores the Earth. The evil doers become ashes below th saints' feet. all good atheists will get to trapple the hypocrites literally....sort of, they don't actually feel it, but they'll sure feel hell!

When you die, there is no sense of time. At resurrection you would think you just died a second ago.

Most theologians say that lost souls will be given a body of sorts in order to experience the torment of Hell.

I don't believe in hell. That said, we've probably all experienced events that make our souls suffer in this life, so I imagine it would be a lot of those, all the time.

HELL IN KJV
One Hebrew word “sheol” is rendered hell. Definition; hades or the world of the dead (as if a subterranian retreat), grave, hell, pit. Three Greek words are rendered hell; geenna, hades, and tartaroo. Definition of geenna; a valley of Jerusalem, used (figuratively) as a name for the place (or state) of everlasting punishment: - hell. Definition of hades; properly unseen, that is, “Hades” or the place (state) of departed souls: - grave, hell. Definition of tartaroo; (the deepest abyss of Hades); to incarcerate in eternal torment: - cast down to hell. Tartaroo is used only one place II Pet.2:4.
Christ teaching the Pharisees in Luke 16:19-31 shows us a separation from God is truly what hell is. The “water” is symbolic for God’s Spirit and love. The word “tormented” means distressed in the Greek, not torture. The “fire” is symbolic for the shame and desire not to be separated from God.
So all who die the first death of the flesh return to God Ecc.12:6-7, but on which side of the gulf do they end up?
Hell is not eternal but is done away with in Rev.20:14-15, called both the second death and lake of fire. This second death is non-existence, for death and hell and those not written in the book of life. This second death or lake of fire is like fat drippings that fall into the fire. Just a poof of smoke into non-existence.
Psa.37:20 But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the LORD shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away.
In my mind what’s worse yet is no memory of you, no tears will be shed for you like you never existed.
Rev.21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
So hell is a separation from God and is not eternal torture or burning. Eventually hell will be done away with or passed away and also some souls. Like fat drippings in the fire, a poof of smoke into non-existence, the second death.
