As you said, Linux is another operating system. It's very similar to Windows and most Windows users have no problem using Linux because the features and commands are so similar. This link might give you more info and even persuade you to try Linux. It's totally free.

You can get a "live CD" that let's you use it without downloading it onto your computer. then, if you want to, you can use the same CD to install it. No time limits, either.

it currently is related more to Mac OS due to the fact that Mac OS X uses a Linux kernel as the background process. that is why is is so much more stable than windows.
there is a big difference in windows vs. Linux. windows is a fairly user friendly system that takes care of itself, while Linux is more of a user oriented OS - the user has to take care of, you also need to know how to run in a Linux command line environment to figure out what to do.

go to google home page -> click on the "more" above the search bar -> scroll down until you see "Special Searches" and click -> select the Linux option -> then google what is Linux (already done: http://www.google.com/linux?hl=en&lr=&q=what+is+linux )

Have fun experimenting with it. find an old comp. that you do not use anymore and install it on there then play around with it. most Linux OS's are free, and can be downloaded fairly quickly over a non dialup connection.

It is pretty different. You should dowload Ubuntu. You can install it along side of XP. I have linux running on a couple of my computers.
