It is highly toxic to them over time. Kind of like radiation. Their bodies build it up in their systems, then they have too much.

because it makes their heart race and can cause them to have a stroke or heart attack. it also distroys their liver.
Chocolate contains a stimulant similar to caffeine. Dogs have a different system for excretion of the substances and they build up in the dog's system and become toxic. The type and amount of chocolate, as well as the size of the dog all influence the likelihood of your dog having a toxic reaction which can include death. The best advice is not to allow your dog to eat chocolate and keep boxes and bags of chocolate out of his reach.
Good Dog Magazine has an online article called "Death by Chocolate" that describes chocolate toxicity in detail
Dogs and people are different in lots of ways. For example, dogs can run around in the snow all day in their bare feet and it doesn't cause them any problems. People can run around barefooted in the snow for 30 seconds or so before it hurts. There are lots of differences like that between dogs and people.
It turns out that, for dogs, a chemical in chocolate called theobromine is the source of the problem. Theobromine is similar to caffeine. According to this page, theobromine is toxic to a dog when it ingests between 100 and 150 milligrams per kilogram of body weight.
Different types of chocolate contain different amounts of theobromine: It would take 20 ounces of milk chocolate to kill a 20-pound dog, but only 2 ounces of baker's chocolate or 6 ounces of semisweet chocolate. It is not that hard for a dog to get into something like an Easter basket full of chocolate eggs and bunnies and gobble up a pound or two of chocolate. If the dog is small, that could be deadly.

There are three components in all chocolate. Chocolate Liquor is like poison to dogs. they can't digest it so their bodies reject it. Milk Chocolate and Dark Chocolate both contain chocolate liquor but White Chocolate doesn't. so you can let a dog eat white chocolate without them getting sick. though, like all things, you should never give them as much as they can eat because it's not really a healthy food for dogs.

It's not the sugar, it's not the caffeine, it's a compound called Theobromine that is toxic to dogs. Their livers cannot metabolize it and so they get very sick. You don't have to panic if your dog snarfed one of your Hershey Kisses when you weren't looking, but depending on the size of the dog, how much they ate, and if it was milk chocolate or dark chocolate (which has higher levels), it could very well kill.

Chocolate has some type of ingredient (I can't think of a name now) that is poisonous to dogs. Even small amount can be fatal and even if you gave it to your dog before and everything was fine, there is no guarantee it will be ok the next time.

It doesn't cause worms or anything like that. My vet told me that dogs don't have the necessary enzymes to digest chocolate. I think the ingredient they can't digest is theobromine, a bitter alkaloid, that causes the euphoric feeling from eating chocolate. This is found in all chocolate but in very high doses in baker's chocolate. I'm not sure what it does to the dog to cause them to die, but it will kill them.

It does not cause worms........ oh geesh!
Poisoning of dogs by chocolate is not as uncommon as you might think
Chocolate contains theobromine. A naturally occurring stimulant found in the cocoa bean, theobromine increases urination and affects the central nervous system as well as heart muscle. While amounts vary by type of chocolate, it's the theobromine that is poisonous to dogs.

Yes its bad because of the way the coco bean is processed within the dog, it turns into a toxin because they cannot digest it the way we can, they reject it and their body tells it, that its a toxin. Dogs however can have white chocolate, which they love.
