Part of being a Christian is the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
He is a real person who guides your heart and mind. Praying and reading the Bible will help you listen to him and be closer to God.
The Holy Spirit tells us when things are ungodly. You already said the songs were "ungodly", so I would bet you are really hearing the voice of the Holy Spirit. You need to learn to listen to and trust this voice...God gave us the Holy Spirit to help us grow closer to Him and be happy. It is not a bunch of rules we have to follow. And it is not so we don't have any fun! God really does love us and wants the best for us! So...learn to listen to the Holy Spirit. Ask HIM if it is alright to listen to and sing those songs...if it is the best thing to put in your mind. Then you'll have the answer you seek.

The Bible tells us to thing on good things, just things, even HOLY things. Now, think about the lyrics to "hips don't lie" and any other songs along that line. The singer is probably talking about something sexual in nature, maybe even suggesting a sexual encounter with someone, anyone, she thinks is attractive. Not marriage, or having a good time in bed WITH HER HUSBAND.
these lyrics are running around in your head and you're shaking your hips and somebody else who's been listening to the SAME music has the same thoughts and sees you, shaking your hips to those lyrics and you're smiling, and flirting with each other and then you're in bed together, and you're calling him up scared cause you're pregnant...you say I'm being silly... Jesus said that it's not what a person eats that makes them unclean but what comes out of that person's spirit, and if you're filling your spirit with stuff like that, it's gonna come out in how you dress, how you behave and your attitude.

Hi there! To be honest with you, there is nothing wrong about it. Its just a cultural thing ie, amongst genres of christain societies that would rather young people sing and listen to christain songs than the secular ones.
what they are not saying is that they wish for a bigger market to promote their kind of music amongst other things, forgetting the fact that all singers, no matter the genre, believe in a higher being and calling, as they( the complainers) do.
The thing is to be not carried away into a fantasy land as you sing those songs, or influence peers or minors in singing and dressing and behaving like these singers.
know this, shakira dances the way she do because of the following reasons:
1. she's trained to do so
2. its in the colombian culture to dance that way as in the west africa females
3. being so good at it, she has to earn a living, and having such a bad voice, she has to promote record sales
4.having signed a contract with a record label that will sell her music, or rather dance style, she has to play to her dictates, amongst others.
i just want to let you know that the people you are singing their songs are very serious people, doing their job to earn a living; so if your singing annoys your spiritual peers etc, try to show them that you are serious minded but just love to sing those songs as a matter of choice, or your way of relaxing, letting off steam etc; after all they wont deny you that!, because they do appeal more to your listening ears.
but in all you do, do that which will make you happy. cheers.

I have struggled with this myself. I love many kinds of music, not all of it "Christian music." It hurts when a band I really like says cuss words in their songs, or their lyrics include sexual descriptions of not a very well-hidden nature. (I mean, many secular songs of the past have implied meanings, but now they just come out and say it in a crude way). It is unnecessary, and makes me wonder why some bands with great talent want to lower themselves- oh, well! I have come to the conclusion that there are all kinds of people in the world, not all of whom live godly lives, but to whom God has given great talents for music, art, acting on stage or in movies- and we have the capacity to derive enjoyment, love, or beauty from some of these things. As a godly person, you will know where to draw the line- as when something is offensive or hurts someone. Be cautious about what I call "forced lust." It sells, so they cram it down our throats. But as someone who obviously has a conscience, and thinks about these things, you should be fine! May God bless your life.

My general theory on music is Garbage In, Garbage Out. If I listen to garbage, I've found I'm more likely to spout garbage and think about garbage. I'm a completely different person after I've listened to most rock, alternative, top 40, pop, etc music. While this limits my music choices, I prefer the person I am when I don't listen to those types of music.

I don't know the current songs, for I am 63 years old, but as long as you don't sing profanity or encourage others to sing such words as far as I can hear if singing gives you great joy, go for it.

Just because you're christian doesn't mean you can't listen to non-christian music. If you believe in god, and act like a good person then that's all that matters.

It's fine. Jingle bells isn't a particularly Christian song but it is sung all the time at Christmas.

Why do you want to sing songs that do not express your own values? If these songs express your values, then your values are not Christian. No mystery here.
