Red splotches on skin. They are actually sunburns. We trim our Jack Russel's hair (to prevent shedding) and if left outside too long, he gets them.

Hot spots are usually a spot the dog has licked, scratched, and chewed til it is a little or large red, sticky spot. It can get kind of a liquid top layer that the hair will get stuck to. Sometimes it is good to shave the spot so it can air out and dry up. They also have hot spot spray at the pet store and that will help facilitate it drying up. Don't let it go too long or it will get infected and require veterinary care.

Hot Spots on dogs can occur when there is an irratation to the skin. It can cause when the hair is matted or long, when there is alot of heat and sweating, or simply it is just irratated. It looks like a skin rash and usually the hair doesnt cover it so it is visible. It usually is red and might have raw skin and possible some blood there. In order to take care of them, you can take the dog to the vet, the groomer, or put TripleAntiBiotic on it to help it heal and prevent infection.

I thought Hot Spots were where the dog chews and scratches a lot. Like an itchy spot or something. I think they usually lose their hair there because the scratch so much.

There patches of the dogs skin that itch. There is Medicine you can get for them that comes in a lotion form you just rub it on there spots to relieve itch. They look like huge bug bites or patches of the dogs skin where there is no fur there red. They mostly get them if there hair is curly or if there allergic to something outside such as grass.
