It's not just your memory - the lunches we got at school were prepared there, that day. nothing pre-packaged or microwaved.
We had fresh hot rolls they made daily, things like homemade vegetable beef soup, spaghetti & meatballs, salsbury steak, desserts.
I have been to school & eaten lunch with my children & I'm appalled at what they get served. Why do they hire so many folks to work in the cafeteria? because nothing is "cooked" anymore. It's all junk food.
I miss the good old days!! lol

I lived in a small Scottish town and the school dinner ladies all knew us. Monday was a favourite as we had scotch broth and homemade cheese biscuits. We had all the usual puddings - lovely, especially sponge and custard. Later, I worked with the school dental service and the best school dinner I had ever.... was at Achiltibuie (home of the world know Summer Isles Hotel) - back of beyond only reached by 19 miles of single track road from Ullapool. Anyway, the cook served mince, mashed tatties and grated carrot - served it outside and the children sang and played guitars - honestly it was incredible. I doubt if the Summer Isles Hotel could put on a banquet like this.

I used to love school dinners. Always hot and prepared on the day. Chicken, roast dinners, pork chops. And a wonderful dessert, apple pies, rhubarb. Who's idea was it to take it out of the schools. Now they are begging to have them back.
