To minimize scratches they may take to the face. And it allows the boxing gloves to glide off opposed to sticking hard when a punch is landed. It's kinda hard to catch a baby dipped in grease huh?

Vaseline is put on cuts to stem the flow of blood, and also so that the gloves slip of the face when taking a punch.

This is just a guess...but I bet it's to prevent "glove burn". When the glove contacts the skin on the face at the velocity it's travelling, it probably grabs and tears at the skin...kind of like a rugburn. That would be about the only reason for me to put vaseline on my face...

Main reason is to help the gloves slide off the face which in turn helps to "minimize" damage to the boxers face.

it prevents cuts. It also prevents cuts that you already recieved from opening up more than they already are. I'm a wrestler and I've actually had vaseline put on a cut in a match before they let me continue.

so that the other fighter's glove will slide off more easily. It helps to stop cuts also.And if there is a cut the trainer sometimes uses a styptic pencil to staunch the blood.
