There are really two kinds of marriage when you get down to it.

The first is legal - and for a legal marriage anyone can do it so long as they get a license from the state they are in. A lot of times (maybe even most of the time) it's done by a religious figure but the main point is that it's recognized by the state you're in.

The second is spiritual - for a lot of people a marriage isn't valid unless it is done in a certain way, legal or not. Like for polygamists, they are spiritually and religiously married to many people, but at the same time only legally married to one or even none. For this you almost always need a holy figure and there are tons of restrictions about how and where you can do it, depending on your religion. Hope that helped!

No, they do not have to be done by a "holy figure". Legally, heterosexual couples can get married by anyone who has authority. This includes priests, pastors, ministers, captains on a ship, justices of the peace and anyone can get a one-time liscence to do a legal marriage. However, marriage is a sacred union designed by God to be between a man and a woman and God. People who don't believe in this holy union (from whatever sexual orientation) don't really have to get married except for legal and convenience reasons. There are other ways to protect your legal rights to your partner besides marriage. Homosexual couples can have a committment ceremony, exchange rings and get the legal paperwork done to have the same rights as married couples. There arent any "real" homosexual marriages before God or before our law, but you can still be committed.

There's two types of marriages. Marriage in the eyes of God and Marriage in the eyes of the government.

To have an official marriage in terms of faith, you have to be married by someone who is ordained in that faith.

But anyone can get commissioned by the court to preform a civil wedding.

Either way the person conducting the marriage has to be approved by the court and a marriage license has to be applied for.

Many homosexual couples just opt for a ceremony and a civil union. Not technically marriage.

We have ministers (Unitarian Universalist) that will marry gay people. Not all religions are against gay marriage. There are also civil unions done by a justice of the peace. Straight people can do either one. Gays are not allowed to do either one in most places. But i think they should be allowed either one just like straight folks. Holy figures do marry gay people, too.

No. Marriages can be done by anyone vested with the power to perform them. However, in most states in this country, homosexual marriage is not permitted and not considered a legal marriage. There are some states that allow civil unions, giving much of the same power as a marriage, and as with heterosexual marriages, it can be performed by anyone with the power to do so legally. : )

I am a Christian wedding minister/officiant. But I do civil ceremonies & interfaith marriages as well. Priests do Catholic weddings; Rabbis, do Jewish weddings. And there are certain denominations that will marry only those of the same faith. There are also Humanist & Priestesses.

A homosexual marriage is not legal, unless your state deems it legal. You can get someone to officiate to bind you together spiritually, but that's it.
