We are having our dog treated for Coccidia right now at the vet which I hear will be a 2-week treatment. What about after that? Is it like chicken pox where you only get it once then you're immune? Or is my poor little vomiting doggy going to keep getting it if I keep taking him on walks?

Coccidial infections can be prevented by removing your dog’s feces regularly from your yard or other areas where the dog goes to the bathroom. Mature dogs are less likely to have a problem with it then puppies, but it is an organism and dogs do not maintain antibodies for them so it is possible for them to get it more then once.

All dogs carry coccidia in their systems. Its when they get an overload of it there is a problem. Usually its diarrhea, not sure if vomitting is really a symptom of it. A lot of puppies have trouble with it because they eat or put things in their mouths when playing out in the yard or going on walks.

There isn't a lot you can do other than treat her for it like you say you are doing. Your puppy will also start to build up an immunity to the parasite over time.

Coccidia is a paresite and once you treat it your dog will be fine as long as you keep up on your annual vet visits and keeping him up to date with his shots...my dog had coccidia when i first got him and I treated it and he hasn't had it since...he goes every year to the vet for shots and a check up and he's been fine.
