the real name is seagull.. there are many different species of seagull for example:
California Gull
Western Gull
Bonaparte's Gull
Heerman's Gull
etc.

seagull is a generic term for gulls (like pit bull is generic for staffies, etc)
so the 'real' name for a gull would depend on what species you're wanting to know.
i live in Utah, our state bird is the California Gull.
