I have a 7 year old cat and she's been doing this for about a year now. Either she poops in the bathtub or on the side of the kitty litter box. She's a long haired cat and extremely prissy. If there is one poop in the box, she wont use it. This is also because she wants to go around the other pile and in doing so, gets in a weird position and then her poops sticks to her fur. The obvious aswer would be to clean the littler box, but don't feel bad. Maybe you will have to watch and clean it every time he usues the box. Or you'll just have to realize your cat is an old man, put a mat down by the box and suck it up.
Good luck.

Has there been a change in the house? My cat had never pooped outside the box either until I had grandkids! The cat,Spot was getting old but still very active, loved everybody including foriegn exchange students that seemed to always gather at the house and would sit on or beside anyone. But when the babies came and on through toddler age, he pooped beside the box! My cat now,Bootsie, does it if the box isn't clean enough to suit her. She is just picky! I tell her "bad cat" and she knows that she is in trouble and runs.I tried putting her nose in and spanking her but nothing has worked other than spraying febreeze, putting in baking soda, or super cleaning the box every other day!Best of luck.

How clean is the litter box? My cat will do that if there is poop in the littler box. Also, did you change the type of cat litter? He may not like it and is telling you so in an unsavory manner. Treat him like a kitten and say, "No", and place him back into the litter box.

If the box is full then that's why. Cats don't like that.. If the box is empty and he still does that he needs to be shown the right way, place him in the box and scratch the dirt with his paw until he starts going back in the box. If he still insists on going on the floor see the vet.

Hes probably suffering from LBD.... Litter box denial... Mostly cats ages 5-8. They start using the bathroom around it. Best think to do it stick the little box in a corner... so it is away from everything else...

He may have a urinary tract infection or bladder crystals. for males, this can be life threatening, because it causes blockage. Make sure to have a urine test done immediately. You can collect urine by putting a sterile cup under his tail when he urinates, or have the doctor take a sample. Ask your vet about it, he can get well with a change of diet (there are specific foods for avoiding crystal formation) and/or antibiotics, but if he is not treated he may have blockage. If he strains or if he doesn't manage to urinate, he must be taken to a vet within few hours.
This is typical behaviour in this situation. Also, he might pee in the bath tub, in flower pots, etc.

Well, once my friend's cat did that because the litter box was full and needed to be cleaned. If your litter box is clean and he's still doing it, then you might want to ask a vet.

Is his box clean? Some cats are picky and prefer a clean box. He could have a urinary tract infection and is trying to let you know that something is not right......if his box is always clean, you may want to take him to the vet and have him checked out.

Do you keep the litter box clean? Cats are offended by thier own feeces and urine I would make sure you are using the scoopable litter and keep it scooped out everytime he goes give it a try Hope this helps
