I asked my dog's veterinarian about this very problem one time. His answer was that if a dog is eating a cat's poop, then there's something in the cat's poop that the cat was unable to digest properly and that the dog is missing from it's diet. So, simply put, there's something in the cat's poop that your dog needs to be healthy, believe it or not...lol
PS: My dog is no longer allowed to lick my face!

The reason is that there is cat food in the cat poop, and the smell intrigues the dog and he smells the food and eats it. I wonder if they know it's poop...anyway, it's kinda hard to stop unless you take the cat poop away from the dog where he can't get it and the cat can but then won't he eat his own poop? most dogs do that....

you can purchase a product from your vet to feed your cat that will be less attractive for the dog. My dog tries to eat poop also... I think most do. you can go to revival.com and see what they have to offer. There are many products to use but they are to be used by the cat and not the dog. Apparently poop has an odor that is appealing to the dog....some dogs odd as it may sound even eat their OWN poop! yuk!

I think it's a "dog thing".... but my vet, who says his dogs do it also, recommended putting the litter box where the dog couldn't reach it.
My personal suggestion, which worked on my daughter's Aussie pup, was spank him/her when you catch him doing it. A good smack across the nose and a firm "NO! BAD DOGGIE" seemed to work but it wasn't a one time thing. About 2 or 3 times and he (FINALLY!) decided he would stay out of the kitty litter altogether. Now this puppy eats ANYTHING and EVERYTHING he can get into his mouth so Mr Aussie Puppy has been a real test of my love of animals.
I also have a tiny toy Chihuahua who likes the litter but not used litter. She prefers "Fresh Step" and "Feline Pine" mixed...... LOL

My beagle did as well - as someone else said - the only way to stop the behavior is to put the box where the dog can't get to it. There's also some spray you can use to repel the dog from the litter box which we tried - but it also kept the cat from going into the box so that might not be a good option.

Because it is a dog. And they all do it.
Go buy detur. It is sold at pets mart and it is supposed to stop dogs from eating there own poop. Our vet said that you can use it on cats too. It worked like charm for our Bassets.

It's VERY common really. He's a dog. Every dog I have ever had has raided the litter box for "treats". Get an automatic litter box. It's the only way to stop this.

You need to scold your dog when he does this. You can buy remedies that you can put in the litter that will make the poo unpalatable to the dogs, but is not harmful to them or to the cats. After a couple of attempts, your dog will stop because he won't like that nasty taste in his mouth.

All dogs eat poo, cats, their's, another dogs, birds...they really don't care. I have asked vets from Maine to Arizona and they all say their dogs do it, too. AND they do not know either.
