Philippians 1:23-24: Paul stated, “For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.”

Was Paul saying that he wished to die and immediately go to heaven?

He was basically saying heaven is a better place than earth, and he would prefer to be there. But he knew he still had things to do/people to bless here so he was prepared to wait for heaven.

It's pretty self explanatory. He was looking forward to being with Christ as do most all Christians, but he knew his job and place in life.
