Of course it is.. but make sure you are not near any refrigirators.. Also only use it after you finished you lunch as it is confirmed by the lunitics scociety that the AM emits food poisoning rays into open food sources...
Of course it is not same if you intend to corrupt your brain in the afternoon listening to The Patriot or Rush Limbugh..

I've heard that at some moments it is easier to receive channels from the other side of the world. I thought that counts for the AM band but I'm not sure.

does AM not stand for ancient music.I prefer PM party music but for the best try FM funky music. and if you want to say good bye to some one best using LW long wave but depending on how much you like them you might want to use SW short wave and after a long week at work try UHF/VHF ultra/very happy friday. hope this answers your question. lol
