I need this answered by tomorrow. We are having our beloved 16 year old dog put down on our property (we were lucky enough to find a vet to make a home visit, so our dog will have the comfort of being at home when this happens), and I was just wondering the legalities of burying a pet on your property.

Believe me, I know its my property and I already have a few cats out in the back. My concern was just that since the vet is coming to our house, there might be a little concern. But now that I think of it, I guess thats why they let you bring your pets back home with you after they put them to sleep in the actual office. So, I answered my own question. Thanks everybody! (except stone little d*ck pony-you're an assh*le)

Actually in many places you are not, according to local codes....but I do not think anyone ever asks permission or gets in trouble for it. You just do it and don't put a sign in the front yard that says you just buried a pet there.

Yeah just bury the poor thing we done it for years, just don't hit any utility lines and make sure it deep enough so there is no problem with smells. Word of advice I would suggest not to bury him but let the pound take him, as it a lot of work to dig a hole as many soils can be very hard.

I've never heard of a problem in burying a pet on one's own property.

Do dig a proper grave so that shifts and runoff don't uncover the grave easily. At least 3 feet down for a big dog would be appropriate.

yes you can bury your dog on your own property. You can even put up a little marker for him as well if you wanted, theres no laws against it.
Just be sure you don't dig where there might be underground pipes or cables.

Sorry to hear about your pet, I know it must be heartbreaking for you.

I have heard that its not legal...but I don't know if that varies from state to state...

We buried our dog in our yard...and actually, when I had to put her down, the vet asked me if I was planning on taking her home or having them keep her...

So go ahead and keep your dog with you in your own yard!

I do not know if it is legal or not... but I have always done it. I have a few beloved pets buried in my mom's back yard.

As long as it is your property, you can bury him wherever you want. Get a nice little headstone, & plant a flower for him. That is what we do for our lost loved pets. It's only right. Sorry for your loss. :(

I don't know the legalities but I have my Chihuahua buried in my back yard and I haven't been arrested.

No one will ever tell me where I can and cannot bury my pet. I will bury my pet any place I choose.
