what is the difference between making generalisations about a gropu of people, be it muslims, catholics, jews or hoodies, young people, prostitutes. If I said Muslims women wear stupid clothes, which they do, I would be racist, apparantly. If I said prostitues wear stupid clothes, which they don't, I wouldn't be racist, but what's the difference? and should we be allowed to have racist views? as long as we don't bully or attack physically anyone for it. And am I a racist for disliking muslims, for their religious beliefs, or is it only colour that constitutes race? Help me out on this, because I get chastised for my dislike of muslims, and I don't think it's fair!

I didn't say prozzies were a race, my point was they're a group, like catholics, so if I said they're horrible people that's equally as bad as me saying catholics were horrible people

it's not just their clothes, that was an example, it's their beliefs

Its not a matter of being allowed, its up to you.

The reason why racism is discouraged, and generally viewed as stupid, is that it is ridiculous to have an opinion about someone you have never met - be it based on race, occupation, gender or whatever.

The question of whether you are 'allowed' or not is not relevant unless you are actually being prosecuted for hate or race crime/literature etc.

What is relevant is that it seems your opinions are out of whack with what some of you associates believe. It could be that you are a racist. If you have already made up your mind about someone you have never met, and this is purely based upon their ethnicity, then you are a racist. in fact, even if your opinion tends to be slanted negatively at all, then you are a racist.

Note I used ethnicity - it has a broader application than race, and this is worth noting as part of the answer to your question.

Whether you think that is good thinking is up to you.

Personally, I agree that people are too politically sensitive. Unfortunately, people scream RACISM every time they are put down, miss out on a job etc.

Unfortunately, racism is still prevalent in society, so in many cases, they are probably justified in playing the 'racism card'.

Finally, you do not actually know what any individual muslim believes. Many might be going through the motions to keep their family or community happy. Like the Christian faiths, there are different levels of faith, radicals, idiots, liars, thieves in Islam too.

Overall, just give people a chance. The most ridiculous thing is when people say that black people should get off their asses and start working for themselves, but would never employ one themselves!!!

Take it easy mate. Maybe actually go find a mosque and have a chat. See how it goes.

Actually I jsut thought of somehing else... You are correct in questioning why its ok to slander some groups, but not others. I have met prostitutes, heroin addicts, drug dealers etc and some are very nice people. Similarly I've met many many christians.

A few of them were nice too!

Racism - The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

Race - A local geographic or global human population distinguished as a more or less distinct group by genetically transmitted physical characteristics.
A group of people united or classified together on the basis of common history, nationality, or geographic distribution: the German race.
A genealogical line; a lineage.

Race does not include religion. Race is physical - appearance, location, common past events. It has nothing to do with beliefs or opinions. The reason why racism is wrong is that it implies that one race can be inferior to another. As the physical differences in appearance, location, or even historical events for that group of people can not make them in any way inferior socially as many racists indicate, then racism is wrong.

As far as your generalizations are concerned, therein lies the problem. You cannot take a characteristic that is attributable to an individual and attribute it to a group (unless that is the ONE unifying characteristic of the group). Not everyone in that group will have that individual characteristic. In addition, most such generalizations are based on a lack of adequate knowledge of the group, and thus, are incorrect to make.

Not all Muslim women wear the same clothing. Not all prostitutes wear the same clothing. You can't generalize to a group something that is individually unique.

Define racism... Basically it means to claim one group or belief is BETTER, more superior, than another by natural selection as in inherently which is not true in any sense but all people of any generalized form as in belief, color, culture... all of us believe in our hearts that OUR way is the RIGHT way or else we wouldn't bother being it.

But with color, you have no choice really, so it is natural to harbor bad feelings over something that is judged, that can't be changed (Unless you're Wacko Jacko) All groups and races are biased to their own... We are therefore all racists and all guilty of believing that our way, our belief, what looks like us is better naturally. Which is not the case in any sense.

It should never have come to the generalization of the word racist because like in every personally negative practice, if you get enough idiots together to believe one thing, although it may seem like truth through consensus... It usually is nothing remotely close to truth because it is biased and not based on fact which is above everything else calculated, counted, weighed and researched to its definitive ends and therefore cannot be reasonably argued with.

It is impossible to prove racial superiority, (even though some have tried, like Jefferson.) religious superioroty (idiots try all day long on here) or personal superioroty by identifying with a group. It simply is not possible. There are too many varients.

So in a nutshell... We are all some form of racist, some form of facist, some form of believing that our way is the best! Even ediquitte as someone mentioned above, is pretensious and often phony just because you think that is what the group expects of you. So I ask you, does it count then? Id bet that at least 3/4 of all shows of concern, goodwill and neturality is fake! Because most people change their stance in private. OF ALL RACES!

We all have the right to believe the way we want, it's when we voice these out in public that they become the heat of debate. Although racism is dealing with the color of skin, most people categorizes everything that degrades another as racist. Your feelings towards Muslims is not racist it is just a prejudice. Just be cautious who you talk to about your feelings. Just like some might disagree with you on the prostitutes -about their clothes, but it would be just that - an opinion.

Do you really know enough about your subject of hate to make an unbiased opinion ? To say that Muslim women wear stupid clothes is to say that the kilts of the Irish and Scottish are stupid altho they are steeped in history. You are a racist each time you open your mouth before you have ever opened your mind. . I can not hate or make disparaging statements about something I don't know anything at all about. I cant hate blindly altho I can hate.I hate war ,I hate killings ,I hate ignorance. Open your mind before you voice a very racist opinion. This only makes you look foolish.Educate yourself on the different cultures and then if you still find you "hate " then so be it .

We all have different views and the freedom of speech which allows our VIEWS to be heard! Those who were raised with the gift of ignorance have often confused the 2 factors. That however, does;nt make the subject more approachable. However, you stated that you dislike Muslims, honestly its rather ignorant to NOT like ANY group of people. Because not an entire group of people have done anything to you! Unless of course you know the whole world. Others should not fall victom to ur self hatred.

Racism is based on skin color and ethnicity not religion. Learn to tame the rhetoric with a little respect...You can say that Westerners differ about how Muslim women dress...We see it as too conservative. You needn't say that they wear stupid clothes. You've a right to any view you wish to have so long as you apply it equally and do so respectfully. In other words you can still "hate" a particular group for a particular reason...just express that hatered in a manner that reflects some sensitivity to the group in public...What you do with those closest/nearest to you/behind closed doors is your business. PEACE!

We have every right to racist views - we even have the right to speak those views. The meaning of racist comes from race - when you group all people of one together and stereotype that group its racist - Black people are all niggers, killers and illiterate. All asians are bad drivers and smell like garlic, etc. When you say that Muslem women wear stupid clothes, its not racist. You're just bad-mouthing their culture. Which you have that right. So - the best advice I know of, is don't be a racist - hate everybody equally.
Meaning don't hate mexicans, hate boarder jumpers. don't hate catholics - hate the "fatherly preists" that molest our little boys. So on and so forth, now as for your dislike for muslems, talk to some of them. Alot of them are great people. (bad clothes or not)

You are talking about bigotry and racism falls under that category along with anti-Muslims, antisemitism, etc. It is impossible not to make generalizations about groups of people, but the question is are we willing to see exceptions in individuals. Can we treat people from any group with the respect that their individual behavior merits or can we only see our stereotype. A bigot will not make any exceptions and is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his own group, beliefs or opinion.

For example, I would suggest that you recognize a spectrum In Muslim people. Islam is a peaceful religion with respect for others. Radical Islam produces the terrorists who (being bigots) think that everyone who does not believe as they do (even peace loving Muslims) should be killed.

You have the right to define a group but it is not right for racist remarks. It shows your ignorace towards others and that we are limiting ourselves by not working together for a better place. Religion and views on others are what builds individuallity. Self individuallity is good only when viewed in a positive way. Racism is a negitive view. All you get from Racism is hatred.
