Toddler logic?

Question

Does my 23 month old son know what grown ups talk about? How much do toddlers understand? Its so cute when my little boy has this look on his face that says "mom, dad I know what you two are saying"

Yes and no.

Yes they understand what you are saying by your body language, tone of conversation, and vocabulary (theirs).

No, they do not understand beyond what you have taught them, vocabulary wise.

Consider wisely the conversations and language that you have around them. They will mimic you. You are their entire world.

If my 18 month old can understand a whole lot in two different languages, I'm sure your 23 month old understands a great deal of what is being said as well.

Toddlers learn to understand before they learn how to talk. So at your child's age, he's getting pretty good at it.

So encourage that inquisitive look that he has. I say stuff to my son to test how much he actually understands and the new sentences he's learned. For instance, I'll tell him to go get a diaper and he comes back with one, or where's your milk which he responds to by bringing me his bottle. Exercices like this will develep language skills and also give you a sense of where your child is in his comprehension level.

When he says that, ask him what you were talking about... sometimes they really have no clue and its funny how they interpret things. Then make sure to explain it so they don't continue to think one thing means something when it means something else... sometimes they do know what you are talking about then you learn to not talk grown up....

well my lil bro started laughing once when my parents were talkin about a womans private area and they asked him what it was and he just said " I don't know but that word sounds funny" So i don't think they really know
