I had this problem with both of my dogs.... and, sadly, there really is not a ton you can do about it. I read a book that said dogs dig out of boredom, lack of attention, burying toys, etc.

Every time my pointer would dig a hole, I'd fill it back up and tell him no... but, finally, I left one of his holes untouched, and he hasn't dug another. Apparently he just liked playing in the hole. Make sure you have a ton of toys outside for them.

Also, try exercising them more... if they're exhausted, they'll be less likely to dig and more likely to sleep, chew on bones, whatever. I wake up 10-15 minutes earlier just to run them and wear them out before I leave them outside for the day.

These two things seemed to work for me. Good luck! :)

You can try burying some balloons. Can't really say it will work but it's worth a try. Build them a run that is on a wooden deck elevated up off the ground with a roof for shade. Keep them in it only when you aren't watching them. Let them out at least 4 times a day for a potty break. This is what I had to do. Works great and I still have flowers.

You can also tarp the top for a roof.

Yes they darned well DO imitate you. Mine did last year after I started tidying up and then went on to dig random holes in the lawn where I couldn't see her out of sheer devilment. Even after coming back from a long walk and before getting her food! I think they just can't stop themselves. Later in the year I let her 'help' me with the job of digging out a large bush (2ft down) and dragging it away. She hasn't dug in the garden since. But now the weather is nice again and she's out there more I expect she will. Burying her poop there worked for a while, so did putting prickly mahonia leaves on the re-turfed area, so did citronella oil for a while. You just have to be vigilant or fence them out.

Most terriers have the instinct to dig, and will do it to anything, anywhere if they can't dig in your lawn... they'll dig your carpet, your linoleum, whatever. It's something they were born and bred to do.

Maybe you should consult a vet or do a search for some sites for terrier owners who may or may not be experiencing the same issues. Perhaps they'd have some suggestions.

Bury their poop in the hole. They won't dig in that spot again. This approach takes a while, because they will dig in another area. After a couple of months, they will give up digging.

Dog Digging Holes?
Stop your dog from digging that "dogone" hole by putting cayenne pepper in the hole. Gives them a weird feeling in their tootsies. He won't be digging that hole any more.
Just get a spary bottle fill it with hot water and three orfour table spoons of cayenne peper...spray all over the yard, it won't hurt your lawn, but it will keep your doggies and other pest away. Even after it wears of, the doggies will remember and stay away.

i think its natural instinct or curiosity that makes all dogs dig , i had a lovely lawn and garden before i got my dogs ( yorkshire terrier and a staffordshire bull terrier ) and they completely ruined it . Ive now paved it over it still looks ok with pots and stuff for flowers to add some colour and its loads easier to keep clean
