I worked very hard in the Navy but was given an honorable discharge for a medical condition. I find it hard to believe that code RE-4 would be a bad reflection on my service because of my work ethics and the fact that I was discharged for something beyond my control. The information I am finding on this code is vague and doesn't seem to apply to my situation as I just worked so hard and was commended by my superiors for it. I am currently applying for a civilian federal government position. Can anyone give specifics about what the code means? Will this code hinder my application?

all the RE-4 means is that you are not allowed to go back in to the military and no waiver is recommended. your discharge characterization should reflect that it was a medical discharge.

RE-4 is not an appropriate code for somebody discharged for medical reasons.

RE-4 is not Good. It means that you will never be able to re-enter the military if you wanted to. It also will hinder you from securing Federal Employment. People who get booted on dishonorable discharges recieve a Re-enlistment code of RE-4. Go to a local base PSD and speak with someone there in the discharge dept. to help you fill out the proper paperwork to have your discharged reviewed and perhaps changed to reflect RER or RER-1.

RE-4 is never good. I don't know how you were given an honorable discharge with an RE-4. The two don't go together.
