I don't know, but I wish they wouldn't. We have leash laws where I live but the cat owners pay no attention. I keep my dog in my yard or on a leash so that he can't take "potty breaks" anywhere else but at home. Cat owners are not as considerate. I have nothing against cats. I just wish cat owners would be more responsible.

It's a hangover from times past when cats were allowed out at night to hunt and it was a natural part of their diet to catch mice or other rodents for their food.
Predators are out at night and I would never let a cat out in the PM. Also now there are so many cars and drivers can't see a cat at night as well as in the day. Drivers may drive faster at night when the traffic is not so heavy.
We had a rash of missing kitties in my neighborhood about two years ago. Now every outdoor cat is gone. We back up on open space and must have had a coyote that waited for the free lunch.
My sister-in-law grew up in farm country in Ohio. All her cats were out at night. When she moved to CA she was putting her 17 yr old cat out every night and eventually it just never came home. Cats, like people, lose sight, hearing, mobility etc. as they age so her poor old lady probably couldn't get away from a coyote (which are not prevalent in Ohio).

Because cats are very nocturnal. They nap most of the day and then prowl around at night. I've had a couple of cats that had to be put out at night because they broke things during the night (glass things). Most people put them out so that they can hunt. Some cats will 'yowl' or 'scream' to be put out at night.

Because they still believe that cats need to roam and prowl to fulfill their natural instincts. What they don't understand is that these are domesticated cats. They don't need to go out to prowl, stalk and kill. Their predatory instincts can be easily met by playing with them and providing them with stimulation. Cats are not necessarily nocturnal - I have 5 and, sure, they nap during the day, but they also play and keep me company and demand affection. Then at night, they all sleep with me. (The bed's a bit crowded, but, they don't cause a ruckus - they know it's time to sleep)
Unfortunately people still do put the cat out at night, or even during the day. What happens is that they are then at risk for SO many unnecessary things. Fleas, ticks, dogs, other cats, cars, diseases, horrible people who capture and torture them or sell them to research facilities. All because people insist that they need to go out. These same people probably don't spay or neuter their pets because they've heard that its best to let them have a litter of kittens - they don't need to have kittens, and the world doesn't need any more kittens. The shelters are filled with them.
So, people put the cat out at night, basically because they don't understand the domestic cat as they exist today.

Hmmm...? maybe since their sleeping and the cat wants to go outside at night and needs to pee but the owner is sleeping they just make it easier for them to keep them out of their way.idk or maybe they just dont like sleeping with the cat inside.

Cats are natural hunters, when in the wild they did their hunting at night.

I don't know i guess they like fleas when they bring it back in in the morning...either that or to see it laying on the front step with a note stapled to it's body saying "I told you to keep your F***King cat out of my yard!"

Because they don't realize that cats are much safer indoors.
