He said, "F*** Jews. They are the one causing all the wars in the world. Are you a Jew?" to the police officer. If he had insulted Christians or Muslims or some other group, would he have landed in hot water and had to do a grovelling apology?

Clearly we live in a culture that is not tolerant of intolerance. (such hypocrisy) Any person, especially a celebrity is going to be put in the spot-light for anti-anything remarks.
Mel was wrong for what he said. No matter had it been against the Jews, Christians or any religious group.
Gibson should just say no to politics on alcohol.

There are 2 reasons why Gibson is in deep sh**.

1. He was speeding. I don't rember perfectly, but I think he was going 80 on 30 mile limit street. That alone warrants an apology.

2. After "The Passion of the Christ," he's had tensions with the Jews.

Flaw in your logic:

If Gibson said bad stuff about the Muslims, there would be outrage. Remember what happened in Denmark with the cartoon.
If Gibson insulted the Christians, people would just say that it was a result of the alcohol because Gibson is a Christian.

Hollywood has been trying to target Mel since he made The Passion of the Christ, and for more the one reason I'm sure. Calling him anti-Semitic could not be justified then because he used the poetic license of depicting the story of Christ's crucifixion, which of course his largely based upon Christ relationship with the Jews. Of course the number of Jews who were actually against Jesus is a small percentage of Jews in total, and the number pales in comparison to those that actually loved him, but that was conveniently overlooked. Now, Mel said some things that can not be justified by any means, other than it was a drunken mistake, and he's on the verge of being "blacklisted".

There are bigot-like remarks made in the media every day by a countless number of people and those who have been offended are still waiting for a response from fickle Hollywood.

Yes, he would have been criticized for being a racist in any case and probably would have decided to issue a public apology along the same lines: "I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed of everything I said."

Hoyylwood insults Christians ALLL THE TIME... should they appologize... there is some lopsidedness here

I think Jewish people should be more concerned about Hammas, Hezbollah and Al Quada than what Mel says when he had a little too much to drink

perhaps the alchohal was like loosining Mel up and some unguarded real feelings were expressed... its hard to say becasue people tend to act worse under the influence

but I would be more concerned if his life was characterized by innapropriate anti semitism and I do not see evidence for it.
overall I think Mel gets alot of unfair critisism and if Mel appologized and will get help I respect him for it

some people dont like the Passion... and frankly... I think it's mostly the substance of the gospels they dont care for and not the artistic licence... I would myself have prefered a number of scenes were done differently like the crowd of kids or the viel of the temple and the artistic licence underemphasized some things and overeemphasized the role of Mary with Jesus calling her mother as he never did in the actual gospels... but I still liked the movie... and saw it 3 times

The movie The Gospel of John which i saw 7 times was less violent and would be a better choice for most people and was word for word the book of John with high artistic standards... its worth the watch definitely

Yes. If he wanted to do damge control to try to save his career and his public image he'd have to do a groveling apology to any of those religions or groups. He was trying to produce a miniseries on the Holocust for goodness sakes. Drunk or not those kind of hate filled remarks should not be tolerated. His comments on gays a few years ago were terrible and insulting as well. This guy needs a reality check. He seems lost in a world of religious ideology and alcohol.

I like Mel's movies, and I think what he said was wrong, but the man was drunk when he said it. I really don't think he would have made those statements if he was sober. Then again, there is a saying: "In vino veritas". ( in wine there is truth) I think this just gives ammunition to those who tried to prove he was anti-Semitic two years ago when he released "Passion of the Christ". Sort of "see, I told so." I think he made some really stupid statements while under the influence, but I also think he's getting more than his fair share of flak, simply because of his religious beliefs. Still, he claims to be a follower of Jesus, who was a Jew while on earth, so how could he be against Jews?

Well...if Mel had insulted Christians a few prominent Jerry Falwell types would have said something about it, probably not much, and it would have been soon forgotten. If Mel had insulted Muslims there would be a large bounty on his head just like happened to Salmon Rushdie and others.

Yes, being a public figure, he is not allowed to publicly insult a group, any group to such a degree. And his responce to the officer was unacceptable, no matter who you are or who you insulted.

The Jews are people to. They have been persicuted for centeries and been the target of hatred.

When a big name, essepcially someone like Mel Gibson, says something like that, It's a huge blow. It also stands out of charactor for him.

He's a celebrity, he and his family have gotten in some awkward situations for saying and doing things that seemed anti-Semetic, and he's apparently got a BIG, HONKING problem with alcohol. Yeah, he would have gotten in trouble for saying something similarly inappropriate about Christians and Muslims.
May I remind you that John Lennon nearly got the Beatles banned in the USA for saying they were more popular with teenagers than Christ. In fact, in the south radio stations broke their records and refused to play their music until he apologized. So, he did.
Being a celebrity mean always having to say you're sorry, and also always being watched.
