My 7-month old is so stupid sometimes. The other night she woke us in the middle of the night shrieking...she had gotten her hip caught under the end of the bed. She is always putting her toy in places she can't get it out herself and yipping at us to help her. She does lots of stupid things. I look forward to her getting older.

She's been to obedience school (clicker-training).

Large dog breeds take longer to mature, and Golden's are no exception. They have been largely bred as companion dogs, so all she really wants to do is be with you. Goldens usually are so willing to please, that she will try her best to do what you want. What you have right now is a great big puppy who looks to you to guide her. I suggest you simply give her some time for her brain to grow into her feet!

Remember that she's still a puppy. You may want her to be older now, but you'll look back and laugh at the "cute" things she used to do to get attention. Have you given her a chance to show her intelligence? She's at a great age to begin basic obedience training and to get socialized with other puppies. Start teaching her "sit", "down", etc. if you haven't yet. You and she can make a great team---her doing the desired command and you rewarding her with dog treats and praise. Your dog sounds like she really desires your approval and wants to be around you and loved by you. She's just waiting for you to teach her a way to channel some of that affection!

Actually, if she knows enough to "ask you for help" I'd say she's pretty smart. I don't blame her for shrieking, if my hip was stuck under the end of a bed, I'd squeal too. It sounds to me like you don't want to be a "dog mom" you'd rather have a stone statue that won't cause you any trouble. I'd say that if she's putting her toys places she can't get to them herself, that's her subtle way of getting your attention. Maybe if you tried playing with her, a little love and interaction, that would do the trick.

Some are sheer geniuses. But some, sadly, are sheer idiots. I had one that was sooo smart. He died so I decided to get another one. I must have gotten the retard of the litter because he ate rocks, barked at parked cars (those belonging to my family and were there all the time), and on occasion would go sit in the middle of the road and watch the cars go by. Maybe you just got a dumb one.

I'm told Labs & Retreivers get out of Adolesence at 2
I'm hoping cause my 1 year old lab thinks sniffing butts is a trick :P Also barks at the coffee maker EVERY MORNING!
My Beardie was so much easier to train.

*WARNING - PERSONAL BIAS*

LOL

Honestly, I think goldens are not the sharpest pencils in the box. Think of the dumb blonde sterotype, that's your average golden. However, they are very TRAINABLE, which is something else entirely. As long as you teach them what you want and give them direction, they're great pets, usually good-natured and obedient.

That said, the more you teach your dog, especially problem-solving type exercises, the more she will have to use her brain and learn to think a bit for herself.

Be glad your dog is stupid, one of my dogs is a canine Einstein and believe me, she's not easy to live with! Even though she's my favourite......it seems the ones we love the most are the ones that cause us the most trouble. :-)

Stupid is as stupid does. Maybe she thinks it's a game. Animals are not stupid. And no, big nasty trucker, you don't have to kick the crap out of them to make them smart. That just makes them afraid of you.

I have heard from several owners that Goldens are dumb in their adolescence!

They do get smarter, usually around 2 years for some.
