Abraham Lincoln is said to have first uttered the phrase, "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt," but there is little documentation supporting his originality. He was a great orator, though, so few would question the words as anyone's other than Lincoln's.

It is from the Great Mark Twain! He is the first.

The RIGHT Version of the quote is:

"“It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.”

But many quoted him without saying that they're making a Mark Twin Quote.

It is so POPULAR as Mark Twain ever is!

No need to mention his name, most listeners understood it without telling.
