The Lebanon War (Hebrew: מלחמת לבנון, Milkhemet Levanon), also known as the Operation Peace of the Galilee (מבצע שלום הגליל, Mivtsa Shalom HaGalil in Hebrew), began June 6, 1982, when the Israel Defense Forces invaded southern Lebanon. The Government of Israel gave a green light for the invasion as a response to the assassination attempt against Israel's ambassador to the United Kingdom, Shlomo Argov by Fatah - Revolutionary Council and to artillery attacks launched by the Palestine Liberation Organization against populated areas in northern Israel.

After the 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict, Lebanon became home to more than 110,000 Palestinian refugees from their homes in present day Israel.

It is estimated that around 17,825 Arabs were killed during the war. There are different estimates of the proportion of civilians killed. Beirut newspaper An Nahar estimated that 5,515 people, military and civilian, were killed in the Beirut area during the conflict, and 9,797 military personnel (PLO, Hezbollah, Syrian, and others) and 2,513 civilians were killed outside of the Beirut area.[6] Approximately 675 Israeli soldiers were killed.

The invasion is popularly held to be the major catalyst for the creation of the Iranian and Syrian supported Hezbollah organization, which replaced the vanquished PLO in Southern Lebanon.

In 1976-82, the PLO operated from Lebanon to attack Israel. In response to these attacks, Israel invaded Lebanon in March 1978. They occupied most of the area south of the Litani River, resulting in the evacuation of at least 100,000 Lebanese, as well as approximately 2,000 deaths.

After continued PLO-Israeli exchanges, Israel invaded Lebanon on June 6, 1982 in 'Operation Peace for Galilee'. It is commonly estimated that during the entire campaign, approximately 20,000 were killed on all sides, including many civilians.
The Lebanese president Bashir Gemayel agreed to send troops from his Phalange militia into camps to clear out 2,000 PLO fighters. On September 14, Gemayel was assassinated. Phalangists entered the camps on September 16 at 6:00 PM and remained until the morning of September 19, massacring 700–800 Palestinians, according to official Israeli statistics, "none apparently members of any PLO unit". These are known as the Sabra and Shatila massacres. The camps were externally surrounded by Israeli soldiers throughout the incident, although the Israeli military personel who were there claimed they had no idea of what was going on inside. The Kahan Commision, an Israeli inquiry into the massacre established by the Israeli government, found that while the Phalangists alone, and no Israelis, were directly responsible for the massacre, it was felt that the Israeli military should have forseen the events, and named then Israeli Defence Minister (and future Prime Minister) Ariel Sharon in particular as bearing "indirect responsibility" for the events. I guess this is the massacre you are referring to.

In 1996, Israel attempted to stop the shelling of Northern Israel during 'Operation Grapes of Wrath'. A UN installation at Qana was also hit by Israeli shelling causing the death of 118 Lebanese civilians. The same town was hit again on July 30, 2006. This time there were in about 57 civilian casualties..

No, nor is it the first time that Hizbollah has massacred Israeli civilians. Hasn't Hizbollah blown up buses and trucks in Israel many years ago? Have you thought about that?

Come on - there is no way a reasonable person can have a totally one-sided view of this conflict.

I wouldnt define it as a massacre...but no this isnt the first time that Israel has inflicted civilian casualties. But you have to consider that these people have been eating at the Israaeli population for years. I bet if you looked at the numbers, Israeli deaths would be higher.

You seem to be confused about the facts. Hezbollah is launching rockets at civilian targets in Israel, from civilian areas in Lebanon. UN resolution states, if military attacks are launched from civilian areas, any retaliation is legally the responsibility of those launching the attacks.
So despite the cowardly dispicable efforts of Hezbollah to make Israel look like the bad guys, it is Hezbollah who are responsible for all the deaths in Israel and Lebanon.

Why aren't you crying about the decades of massacres against Israel as done by any number of various radical islamic fanatical groups?Israel FINALLY stands up to it's enemy and you finally decide to notice bloodshed in the middle east. So either you are a terrorist supporter, an anti semite, or an islamic, so which is it?

They were shooting at rocket launchers - The building collapsed over 7 hours after it was hit. Maybe it was an inside job to make Israel look bad. The Hezbollah are the ones who killed those people because they knew if they placed thier guns there the guns would be taken out.

Israel seems to pick an unlucky country every so often and beat them like a redheaded step child. They've done this to pretty much all of their neighbors over the past 50 years.

Yes its happened before.
Pretty much for the same reasons.
The Lebanese wouldnt contain their own criminals - who launched attacks against Israel. Israel, having no choice, kicked their asses clear into Egypt.

Call it what you want - but its Lebanon's fault.
