I want to cook dinner for my family but don't know what to fix. I've made chicken alfredo before, but that's about it.

Anything with pasta! Plain old spagetti with meatballs is an all time favourite.

It depends on your families preferences.

If your family is big on pasta dishes then cook some pesto
Take a lot of fresh basil (a hand full or more)
1-2 Garlic cloves
a hand full of pinenuts/walnuts
a splash of olive oil.
Grind together into a green paste. Take the freshly boiled pasta and put in a warm frying pan with a pat of butter and a spoonful of pesto, stir together and you have perfection.

If your family likes chicken/steak orientated dishes you can just BBQ it on the grill and have a salad as a side dish!

You could make pepper steak with white rice. It's one of the first meals I ever made for my family when I was growing up, and it's super easy.

What you need:

Stir fry steak (it's just cheap steak cut into thin strips)
two green peppers cut into thin strips
one large onion cut into strips
a pint of sliced mushrooms
two envelopes brown gravy mix or two cans prepared brown gravy
enough servings white rice for your family (prep instructions are on the bag)

What to do:
Saute your peppers, oinions, and mushrooms in a couple tablespoons of butter. Don't let them get soggy, just crisp/tender will do.

Cook your steak strips in a large skillet with a couple tablespoons cooking oil. Dont's let them get completely done. You'll want them with a slight pink center still.

You'll probably have some liquid from cooking the steak. Use this along with the rest of the water you need to prepare the brown gravy envelopes. If you have the canned brown gravy, then you don't have to worry about that part of it.

When you have the veggies, steak, and brown gravy prepped, combine those three into the large skillet you cooked your steak strips in and heat it all together.

Spoon servings of the white rice you prepped onto a plate and top with the pepper steak you just made to serve.

How much time are you alloting to cook? Some new dinner suggestions:
Quick Barbecue chicken for sandwiches :
Boil chicken breasts and then chop. Mix with favorite flavor of barbecue sauce in microwave safe bowl, heat for 1 minute. Serve on buns.

Quick and easy potatoes:
Take two cans of sliced or whole new potatoes. Chop a few green onions. Place in microwave safe bowl and salt and pepper to taste. Seasoning salt instead of regular salt also adds a little flare. Mix water, butter, water and a amll amount of milk or cream and place over potatoes. Place covered in microwave eight minutes. Stir and then microwave two more minutes.

Quick salmon:
Cover salmon in maple syrup or honey and terriyaki sauce. Grill in pan or on gill.

Busy Mom's chicken:
Place four chicken breasts (salt and peppered to taste, maybe a little paprika for color and interest) in crock pot. Cover with one can of cream of mushroom mixed with 3/4 can water. Set on low. Cook 3-4 hour. Serve over rice or noodles. Optional add in: stir in 1/2 cup of shredded sharp cheddar or sauteed onions or mushrooms.

If you are looking to spend more time in the kitchen, there are more time consuming recipes. Hope these help a little.

My family likes my homemade chicken pot pies. I take pie crust..just that cheap jiffy pie crust..usually 3 boxes of it and prepair that as directed on the box. Use flower to roll it out flat to the shape of the pan. You want the bottom crust to come up the sides of the pan so you can seal it with the top crust. One and a half box for the bottom crust and one and a half for the top. I cut up boneless/skinless chicken in to small pieces and saute it with onions until its just pink in the middle.
Lay your bottom crust down in a cake pan..at the bottom of the crust, put in a potato cut into small pieces, celery cut into small pieces, a bag of frozen mixxed veggies and your chicken. Then I take chicken gravy..you can either make it or get the package kind that you just ad water too...use 4 packages cause you want alot of gravy. Put that on top of all the veggies and chicken then lay your top crust on and pinch around the edges to seal it. Poke a few holes in the top and put it in a 375 oven for about an hour. It's GOOOOD. My kids love it and so does my husband.

1/2 cup brown sugar
1 (13 1/2 ounce) can pineapple tidbits, drained (reserve syrup)
1/3 cup vinegar
1 tablespoon soya sauce
1/3 cup chopped green peppers
4 servings

1. cut chicken into bite sized pieces.
2. Dip in egg, then coat evenly with seasoned breading mix.
3. In large skillet stir fry a few pieces at a time until golden brown, add oil as needed.
4. Remove chicken and drain on paper towel, drain oil from skillet.
5. Mix cornstarch and sugar, stir in reserved pineapple juice, vinegar and soya sauce until smooth.

Once the porkchops are pan seared throw them in the oven on 350 and forget about them. The tenderness is unsurpassed.
