the problem with using a 7 segment display for hex is the B and 8 will look the same, also the D and 0.

There are commercially available display driver chips. They have built in converters that auomatically converts decimal to hex, binary to hex, etc. Try checking with electronics shops, surely these chips would be available if they're selling hex displays.
