I think in India atleast there is no such problem !
The British rule, among many other things it has taught , has also taught the word God as a reference to a supreme being in English language, and to this day is used widely and freely as such in India. Perhaps, if this idea can be accepted, there should be no problem , unless Christians themselves object to attributing such a wider sense ! Then the question would be to classify God as an English word, or exclusive reference to Christian religion ! Let the world decide by consensus !

It would only be impolite for a nonchristion to say it to a christian. Always cracks me up that someone who doesnt believe will go around saying "Oh my God!" Doesn't offend me, just cracks me up.
Haha like the atheist who was about to get eaten by a bear and he calls out "oh my god!" and God replies, why are you asking for my mercy, when you have denied my existence for so long? The atheist says that he does not wish to be redeemed, but for God to make the bear a christian, in hopes that this will save his life. God does as he says. The bear kneels and puts his paws together and says "Dear God, thank you for this meal which I am about to recieve."

generally speaking, it is not intended to be insulting and to most people it would not be
ironically even in Aethist communism USSR the language is filled with God comments
Even the most strident russian aethist will say
slava bogu !!! Prasie God
and no one takes offence
in the end... its polite to know the person your talking to and what sets them off... most people wont care... some relgious folk might feel its an overly casual way of using languag about God and some aethist want ot drive God talk into the closet
It is polite to know the other person and take it into consideration

this is an fairly vast question. Atheism actually ability 'with out god' and because maximum human acts of devastation have been interior the call of one god or yet another, this might propose that they are much less risky than those with a faith. in case you think of roughly it in a extra summary way, atheism promotes loose thinking and the choice to have confidence what you opt for for with out the situation of somebody telling you what's authentic with out any data. in this way, many faiths actual sell lack of understanding over understanding. (The reasoning at the back of this lays with early society people attempting to variety a practicable society that applications properly jointly. faith is an fairly clever thank you to try this, hence why there are a good style of similarities between them). So finding on what you propose via injury, in early human society atheism would have been extra destructive to the form of the human race yet in modern-day cases (the final a hundred and fifty years or so) faith is dropping its place in cutting-part society.

Non-Christians also believe in God, so to say "Oh my God" would not be polite. Saying "thank God" is fine.
I work at a Jewish school, and it's taken me a year to train myself to not say "bless you" when someone sneezes. They don't "bless" each other, so it is not right for me to do so, but if I slip, they have manners and just say thank you.

It is never polite to say " oh my god" as an exclamation. It is using God's name in vain.

It should be more insulting to a Christian/Jew/Muslim than to some one who does not believe. It would fall into the catagory of 'taking the Lords name in vain'

No its kind of cute. Just like when a baby says "ga ga goo goo". I don't get insulted by that, why should I get insulted by the other?

It's very insulting. When you do that, your coolness factor drops 99%. It's like a mockery of what we believe in.

no, simply because the non-believer does not believe in the "vain" meaning behind it.
i go around saying it all the time.
anyone can take offense by it, but shouldn't as long as it's not them saying it (it's their belief, isn't it? why should some one else have to follow a different person's belief?)
