I firmly believe that using historical context presents the Truth from the books and sets you free from having to make stuff up to defend yourselves.

The Bible is enough context. If you don't understand it, then ask the Holy Spirit to help you to understand the Word.

Christians interpreting the Bible without historical context?
No offense, but I think you have us confused with someone else. Interpreting the Bible without historical context is, so often, what atheists do!
That's why, for instance, they post smart-aleck questions on this forum asking how much money they should sell their daughters into slavery for.
If that's not interpreting the Bible out of historical context, I don't know what is. And it's not the Christians who do that sort of stuff -- it's the ones who try to grind an axe against our faith.

Mr Mojo... do me a favor please... edit your posting and prove this statement... "ALL say dinosaurs and man were here at the same time. Obviously not true. Take it from there."
Were you there? How do you explain unfossilized blood in dinosaur remains found in Alaska, etc? Just as you can't prove your anti-biblical supposition, I can't prove my pro-bible beliefes. I guess that's what faith is all about.
How do you explain dinosaur like images in ancient cave / rock paintings? How would ancient man known about dinosaurs if they hadn't SEEN them?
Oh and as for the original question of this thread... I love to place history in Biblical context, not the other way around. In other words, I assume the bible is correct and if it contradicts history, then I assume that the history was recorded incorrectly.
But the Bible is really all about history.

I find that historical context is important.
Look at Paul's famous line about women submitting to their husbands.
Without knowing the Paul was never married or the status of women, that pasage can be taken out of context.
It is also imporant to look at the Bible in it's original format. It's amazing how much is lost in translation. Try taking a Hebrew/Greek class sometime--AMAZING!!

I always like to account for historical context. Accounting for history sheds light on why things are said. I was brought up in an environment that didn't give historical value. I spent years hating Christianity because I didn't understand what was really being siad.

Do you refer to the seven day thing? See I see it as time is man made. A day to god could be eons. Not to mention if you believe in the big bang. Where did the first atom form? Where was the first electron formed? Every thing has a beginning and an end. Where was the beging? That seems to bother me the most.

Actually I like to comapare the events in the Bible with actual historical records. It's amazing how accurate the scriptures are when you take the time to research the history.

Three most important things while reading the Bible:
1. Who is speaking
2. Who is the speaker speaking to
3. When was the scripture created

I think the great majority of them do! Most just goes through the ritual of religion and never grow spiritually through the study, metabolization, and application of Bible doctrines with comparision to human history!
