to learn a little bit about other religions?? It amazes me to no end how fearful and ignorant a lot of people are of others beliefs....Why should I you ask??? Not to try and be CONVERTED to any other belief but just to be able to better understand where people are coming from. Plus it dispells a lot of myths. What's so wrong with that?? I have and it's only made me MORE secure in my own beliefs. There are several websites, one is www.beliefnet.com but it's just one of many...Let me know what's wrong with doing this??????????

Right on dude. I took a lot of religious studies classes in college as electives because I think it is vital to understand others. As a result, I've read almost the entire Bible, parts of the Torah, and a good ton of mythology from around the world. It amazes me when I see people in this section who obviously don't know what the hell they are talking about.

Its not that hard to learn about other religions and it makes the world a better place when you can start a discussion from an interesting and relevent point instead of from accusations and stereotypes.

This requires a lot of work, and dedication to learning what things actually mean. Commentaries are vitaly necessary. I can't imagine someone trying to read the Bible (particularly the Old Testament, but the New Testament as well) or Qur'an without one.

Here is a great book on the subject:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0062508113/sr=8-1/qid=1154526120/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-2441314-0841457?ie=UTF8

I use an Oxford Commentary (the literary/entymological/anthropological kind), it clarifies not only what word choice is probably best, but also what the passage probably meant at the time it was written. It is not available online. For the Qur'an the only place I can go it here:

http://www.al-islam1.org/quran/

I haven't bought a Qur'an commentary yet.

Most religions have a vast amount written. Catholics have just outrageous amounts of information to read.

There is nothing wrong with that at all. I am Christian, but I do try to learn as much as I can about other religions, plus other denominations within my own. That's one of the reasons I come on here and waste enormous amounts of times (actually waiting for school to start back up) I want to know what people are thinking. It is amazing what I see on here. I have learned TONS about people and their belief systems. But fearful? I've never been fearful of religion, even before I gave my life to Christ religion never "scared" me. I guess if I had asked your question I would have used "angry" what is everyone so angry about? Hmm, may have to use 5 points and ask that one! :)

You are right. Plus people should bother learning about different customs, too. Like why Muslim women should cover themselves. In Western culture, women exhibit their body parts and get a great deal of sexual attention. In Muslim countries women are regarded with more respect. They are not viewed like sexual objects. Of course, no extreme is positive.

Some people are convinced that other faiths are wrong and it's a waste to learn about them.

Some are so shaky in their faith that if they learn about anotehr, thy might lose believe in their own (Hey, if you faith is that shaky, maybe you never had any faith in the first place)

Some don't know how to approach it or where to find material that explains it well.
