It could be much better, but it is much better than most places in the world. I wish we could get more money into the system and out of the hands of the administration and directly into classrooms, where it needs to go.

Schools are overcrowded and teachers cannot give individual attention to every student so some fall between the cracks. However, more parents need to be involved in making sure that their child is getting the help they need. Schools offer after-school tutoring programs. A lot of parents won't even ask their child if they have homework or have ever been to a PTA meeting, or any other school activity. Parents that are not involved have no idea that their child is falling through the cracks. Parents have to work in conjunction with the teachers to make sure that every child is getting a decent education. It is not entirely up to the schools.

I feel in my area it isnt going well at all.... The Elementary school my kids attend is over crowded... the school is made for 500 children.. it holds 1100 children.. they are crammed into class rooms, teachers are underpaid and over worked.. Half of the teachers dont seem to care that the kids arent making the grade. Most of them dont offer or refuse to give tutoring. Or if they do, it doesnt make a difference because they spend the afternoon getting ready for the next day, instead of working the the children there for help... I think the No Child Left Behind Act is just something that covers a teachers hind end when they dont do their job properly and they pass the child anyway.... As you can tell.. I dont like.. I think we need teachers who want to teach the children... I think we need more teachers... better pay for our teachers.. more money for our teachers to use in their class rooms... I think we need an overhaul and some fresh blood brought in to fix things... NC, USA

Education is going in totally the wrong direction. If our schools are doing so poorly in educating our children that they actually sell software to teach you how to make a resume, I dread to imagine being the supervisor over these brats. At least I know what to look for when these resumes cross my desk now, so they can go into the appropriate "junk" file, the trash can.

I wish public education would focus more on personalizing instruction based on individual strengths and weaknesses rather than continuing along the current lines of herd mentality. For example, instead of placing kindergarteners according to skill and ability, we arbitrarily focus on birthdates. Even though age cut offs vary widely across the country (from June 1- Jan 1, depending on district) most districts refuse to test children for advanced placement, and some no longer screen for kindergarten readiness (or lack thereof).
Similarly, anyone who has attended districts in more than one state can attest to the fact that there is little consensus on the correct age to teach various math concepts, reading skills, cursive writing, etc. Yet individual districts are very hung up on "their way" of doing things and expect all children to perform appropriately on the district's timeline (IOW NCLB testing schedule). My child spent much of 2nd grade in one state repeating concepts already learned in K in a different state...what a waste of a year.
I know the old days of educational "tracking" did a disservice to minorities and girls, but sometimes it gets very frustrating when you see children at either ends of the bell curve getting the shaft because they aren't average enough. While there are some programs in place for the kids who struggle, no one has time to work with the kids who exceed the norm. They're just happy they don't have to waste time getting them up to speed for NCLB.

How could it be allright when we pay professional athletes millions and teachers have to live in subsidized housing? The courses have been dumbed down and discipline has virtually disappeared. No wonder 3rd world countries rank higher than the US in education. No child left behind? We have left every child behind.

The education in any country is reflection of the socio-economic condition. Therefore, no point asking condition. It is always based upon the situations of the country and always good as well as demanding.

American schools are atrocious. We spend a lot of money on education and are raising the stupidest generation of kids yet.
