I would report it through the credit agency that shows the collection. Once you dispute it through them if the item is not removed they will tell you why and provide a contact number for the collection agency.

Contact the company in question with a certified letter of dispute, then contact all 3 major credit bureaus (transunion, equifax, experian) and inform them of the dispute with reasoning. Last but not least, contact your local better business bureau offfice, the bbb can launch an investigation to get to the bottom of your issue. Be prepared to provide any and all documents proving your innocense. good luck!

I would send them a registered letter outlining your position on the dispute AND send a copy to all three credit reporting agencies. Then document everything. Make detailed notes of any phone calls etc.... Only pay what you agree you owe and mark the check "PAID IN FULL"
