With our den I used yellow on the walls. Then I used the SAME yellow and added a darker color (in this case, more brown) to the same paint. Then use a SEA SPONGE (trust me, it's worth the ten dollar investment, so much nicer than anything else) and go for it! I did our whole den in no time. Just pour some paint in a tray, dip sponge, BLOT on a newspaper, then go all over, come back, fill in areas. Trust me, within seconds you will be a pro!

In my kids room I did white walls with sky blue sponge and it looked so fun! But the two colors works best.

You have to use 2 different paints.
I asked the people at Menards how to do it. Home Depot has clinics that you can go to learn this stuff. But, here's how I did it.
The first coat of paint, I just painted with an eggshell finish in a light color, I used antique white. Then the sponge paint I used a glaze finish in a blue color and just dip the sponge in the paint and dab on the wall There are sponge rollers you can buy now too to make the job a lot faster. However, if you don't put the paint on the sponge evenly, (roller or by hand) and you get a pocket loaded with paint it will drip down your wall, so you want to make sure that the paint is very even on the sponge.
But I recommend going to one of those stores in your area to see if they have a clinic so you can practice for free on their stuff.
Or, what I did was buy a poster board so I could try it out and see what it would look like by holding it up to the wall before I did all that work and didn't like it...

Some sponge painting techniques tend to look kind of tacky, so try this one: Whatever color you wnat the least of, paint the whol ewall that color and let fry. Then, get the color you want the most of and add a little water. Get an old rag, dip it in the bucket of watered down paint and rub it on over the first color. Depending on how heavy or light you rub will change the outcome of the look. You can try dabbing, doing circles, waves, whatever your little heart desires! Practice a few different techniques until you find the one you like! It is only paint and you can always just re-paint it if you don't like it! Have fun!

I did a wall that looks like leather by rubbing on a chocolate brown on top of a cream wall. It was done very uneven and imperfect and gets soooooooooooo many compliments b/c it really does look like leather!!
