Cost mostly, it is cheaper to put it on the motherboard than to have a seperate card.

A built in sound card is built right onto the motherboard, the other is an add on PCI card that you plug into the motherboard yourself.

A sound card is an additional card you can add to your computer & generally is PCI the built in chipset is intergrated on the motherboard.

sound card has better output, and also u need to purchase sound card in machines older than p3, but after p4 the motherboards are having built in sound cards, which quality is not that good........... so in order to have good sound quality u can aply another additional sound card.but that is too in machines p4 only......
