I was wondering if anyone out there has a membership to a warehouse club such as Costco or BJ's and if they really feel like they save money shopping there. We are a family of 3, 2 adults and 1 child. I'm concerned the I would end up spending a really large amount of money and end up with WAY more then we really need. Any suggestions or ideas?

yes you can save money, but you have to only buy what you can use before it expires. Don't get the 5 gallon jug on mayonaise unless you eat it all in the 30 days before it expires.

My husband and I have been a member of Costco for many years. Yes, we do save quite a bit of money there. The meat, dairy, bread is soooo much cheaper. Dry foods are a great deal to but are in large quantities, so if its something you won't use right away you might just get a small size from the grocery store. I also find that when you purchase something that is at a different store for around the same price, you usually get a bonus something with it. Their clothing is not necessarily cheaper but once in awhile you find something for a great deal. For holidays, Costco has great gifts that aren't available anywhere else, which I love. I have gotten so many things that people say "wow where did you get that?". So yes you can and will save money, but you also have to watch out, because there are so many deals and neat things you can easily spend hundreds of dollars.

I don't know about BJ's, but Costco can really help you save money. Be smart about what you get. Get things that don't go bad (tissue paper, paper towels, etc.). Also, if you can go with another family, you can split up the huge amounts that you get into two reasonable sized buys.

Some other things are also definitely cheaper there. Aspirin, vitamins, photo processing, etc.

But one caution - too many people get "buy happy" when they go to Costco. They often say that they can't get out of there spending less than $100 or more. They aren't being smart, they are letting the warehouse aspect of Costco talk them into buying more than they need. Be smart what you want, be smart what you buy. You will definitely save money.

In California we were members of Costo - I think we saved a lot of money then on diapers and formula! And yes initially you do spend more - put the bulk sizes last longer. Meat is a great discount and a great quality in these stores. Toilet paper is another saver. You have to have a list of what you actually purchase every month and stick to the list - you will spend more but what you buy will last longer than a month's time so it is a savings.

You have to watch your prices. Sometimes, you can get a better deal if your local supermarket is having a sale. For the most part, any kind of dry goods are at a reasonable price there. Just know how quickly you eat your perishables before you buy them in bulk. One of the best things you can save money on is cereal. It's usually about 1/2 price of that in the supermarket (although their selection is limited).

These places sell in bulk, if you purchase more than what you need, then you are not saving anything. You have your money tied up in useless merchandise.
