I work for an insurance agency and love my job, but have been unhappy recently due to being passed over for a promotion. Yesterday my brother-in-law offered me a job working for the insurance agency that he is manager of, and it is for a lot more money then what I am making now. I would be a fool to pass up more money, because lets face it nothing is getting any cheaper these days yet I feel guilty for considering the new job.My brother -in-law and my current boss and I all 3 worked for a different insurance agency together so we are all friends. Should I go to my boss and let him know about the offer and see if he counter offers or should I just take the new job and give my 2 weeks notice? Please help!

Just give your boss notice, and take the new job. Once you have the "recently unhappy" thing, it tends not to go away. A change of employment might be just what you need to feel appreciated again!

I worked in the insurance industry for thirteen years with Aetna Casualty and Surety, which reorganized several times and is no longer in business, three years with a local Maryland Casualty office, which rated our office as exceeding standards than closed it a month later and laid off a bunch of employees and five years with GAI group, two different companies, where so many bad things happened, I finally walked away from insurance business and never went back.

I say all this to let you know, companies go for the bottom line which is profits. When companies are losing money, they do not hesitate to lay off, fire, close or whatever is necessary to get out of the red.

Consider yourself your own company. You are the CEO and you have a way to make your bottom line more profitable by moving on. Just do like the big boys do. Go for it!

Take the other job! Why stay where you're not promoted.
Just tell your current boss (since he is a friend) how you feel about not getting promoted and about your opportunity to make more money. Give him the two weeks since he is your friend - then say bye bye!
If you're all really friends, you still will be.

Companies want you to be loyal to them but do not believe that theyshould be loyal to their employees. I am sure your company will not hesitate replacing you if someone comes along for less money. Grab the opportunity. Look after yourself and take the new job.
