When we cant find a solution to a problem we lie to get out of the fix. when we are wrong but dont want to be caught we lie what we dont realise is that by lying we get caught in our own web cos we cant remember our own lie. so its best that we tell the truth always. we dont feel guilty when we tell the truth but feel guilty all the time we lie. for 1 lie we have to invent 100 lies but with one truth we dont have to suffer. guilt pangs. do we?

I'm not a psychologist, but I can only offer this. My guess is that people tell lies because they are afraid of the truth. If someone knew the absolute truth about a person, they feel the person they are talking to will reject them.

In the long run, though, the truth WILL set you free. Lies will become a tangled web - one lie will lead to tell another lie.

Thank you for the great question,
Robert

We lie for different reasons. When we lie to loved ones we do this to protect them and our selves from emotional stress.
When we lie during a sale is to achieve the best possible sale to benefit our selves. when a child lies it is to not pay the consequence. When a grown person lies it is fear of judgement. Some people lie to get kicks out of other peoples reactions. We see lying as a horrible thing, however it is a natural survival instinct. It has and will keep us alive. Only used to hurt others is it a crime.

Many people tell lies to impress others. They don't think of it as lying, but more like bs'ing, figuring the people they are lying to really knows they are bs'ing.

Others do it to get ahead or achieve some kind of capital gain, such as lying on one's resume about their job duties at a particular company, figuring that it would be difficult to find out otherwise.

Then there are those who lie to be nice to someone. The so-called "white" lies. When presented with a picture of a friend's new baby, can you really tell me, you'd tell your friend, that their baby is totally butt ugly?

A question I often ask. I think that some people don't like to hurt others feelings.
I don't have a problem with that. If they like me then that's ok. If they don't then, the world is a big place. Plenty more people.
I have great difficulty in lying because I don't see the point.

My great-Grandmother told me this.

Oh what a tangled web we weave
when first we practice to deceive.

Lived by it ever since.

1) Survival. If we think the truth will get us into trouble, we will lie on instinct alone.

2) To Keep the Peace. "Do I look fat in this?" LIE, brother, lie!!!!!

3) To get out of doing things we don't want to do. "Um, I can't come over to help you move into your new house, I have, er, um, a doctor's appointment today."

4) To spare other people's feelings. "No, honey, I thought you did a great job in that concert!!"

5) Because we cannot face certain facts ourselves.

6) To get elected and remain in office.

7) To give ourselves an advantage in a social or business situation.

Lying is usually a self-serving, self-preserving activity.

Because we don't like the truths we are hiding when we lie!
Some people are insercure about what they are or do so the lie to make them self feel comfortable.
For personal gain(con men/women).
Scared the person they are lying to will not be able to handle the truth(would you tell a five year old what a dildo was if they found it!).

To cover up something. Not confident of facing the truth. But it is best to face the truth or else one has to go on telling lies to cover up each lie.

because the truth will set you free and it scares the hell out of us to truly consider being free...not bound to anyone or anything...so we lie and place veils before us, so that our true image is hidden

we all have a cosmic spark or flame within and this is covered by a husk, this husk is nothing more than the veils...this covering must be pulled back in order for humanity to attain the level of consciouness known as: messianic consciousness

it is time to pull the covers

Fear, I think. A lie is what we try to protect ourselves from punishment when we are kids, and it happens to work often enough that we only get encouraged in the belief that if we hide the truth, we may evade responsibility.
