Man is killing his own people because our leaders have not yet realized that progress can be made through peace, and non violence. The other reason is because man is also very greedy. To many people profit from wars-Military Contractors People in the Armaments industry, etc- because of these individuals war has become a large part of our economy and could not be abandoned without many people being upset. This is what Dwight Eisenhower meant by the "Military Industrial Complex." If we allow war profiteering to continue we may never achieve world peace. We could achieve peace if we put as much money into building schools, giving homes to the homeless, food to the hungry, medicine for the sick, as we put in our defense budget.

I would imagine it is because people are not looking at this in terms of "what if this were my country". In some situations, before you can get this question answered, you need to research the practices of the region's religion, and the region's values and norms. If a country gives a suicide bomber great respect for killing themselves and others over something that could be solved peacibly, chances are those people will follow the guidelines set by their churches and state, even if it means loosing their lives. Obtaining a sense of belonging is sometimes more important than life itself for some people and if the way they are honored is obtainable by death, chances are they will follow it. Genocide is a very sad thing, but the study of Sociology and Religion will tell you many things about something like this.
