Film/conventional camera:
the film is photo-sensitive, meaning it is light sensitive. when your capture a photo, light enters the camera and is imprinted on the film, depending on the light intensity and colour. (meaning there will be no photo taken if there s no light)
Digital camera:
for the digital camera, there is a sensor inside the camera that record the image, something like the film in filmcamera. so the same work, no light, no picture.

well the old fashioned kind work by exposing a strip of photographic film to light. The click that you hear is the sound of the aperture opening and closing, which lets the light through (it doesn't take long).
