The answer is... there is no best dog breed, they all have their differences...
so it mostly depends on your purpose... do you want the dog as a show dog? and/or a working dog? and/or just as a pet?
you may need to add much additional information before narrowing down the field to a particular set of breeds, because, trust me, there are many out there.. and even more now that "designer" dogs (like the multitude of Poodle crosses) are out there...

Mini Goldendoodle !! You get the temperament of a golden retriever in a smaller less shedding dog ( 25 pounds)!!! We love our to pieces !!! So smart too....She gets that from both parents !!! She loves to play fetch and she's small enough to have her go with me in the car with no problem ( and without all the hair !!)

pugs and miniature pinschers they are both great dogs,good show dogs,lap dogs, and are both definatley family dogs.
