Hi, Just built a new house, and let husband pick the color for the walls. He is very traditional and choose, Antique White (throughout house). The walls of course after three weeks show up every handprint. I want to paint my walls in my living area, a sage green, my chairs are a willow green, and couch is a mix of Burgendy, Browns, and golds. My trim on the windows are white. I just custom ordered Hunter Douglas Honeycomb shades in color Moss Green. I have hard wood floors, color - Honey Oak, and Oak furniture color Golden Pecan. Can someone please help me turn my long narrow windows into wider looking windows, and recommend a color and style curtains..drapes. My windows are 33 X 95 inches. OR the best window treatments, I do not wish to cover up my pretty shades. THANKS

To make the eyes run horizontal and make your window appear wider, you need curtains that do not close, so your shades will be perfect. Long soft chiffon fabric, floral theme with moss green color, intertwined burgandy and gold accents, that hang beyond the floor at least 6" with a sweeping swag that are longer than the curtains Metal tie backs to accent your decor and bring out and display the moss green shade..Hope this gives you an idea to soften yet widen your view.

Consider the style, size, and shape of the window, and what you want the curtains for. Think about the room, its proportions and what it’s used for, the upholstery, and accessories. Curtains can be hung from rods in a number of ways.

Although most are functional rather than stylish, some decorative types are available. The right choice will not only enhance the window but also turn an ordinary room into a really special place.

Here are ten household helpful hints for choosing curtains:

1. Match curtain fabric with upholstery to unify space that seems untidy.

2. Use carpet to mark off space. A rug is ideal for establishing a social zone within a room.

3. Fabrics with classic patterns give a period feeling to the ambience of a room.

4. Remember that the bed linen, tablecloths, and towels also contribute to decoration.

5. Sheer curtain and gauze enable us to filter light.

6. Venetian blinds allow control over the amount of light entering a room.

7. Do not limit curtains and blinds to just windows. They can be used in an excessively long passage or hallway. Blinds make good screens.

8. In rooms with a lot of pictures, different colored walls, or furniture, it is suitable to use neutral tones for the curtains and upholstery.

9. Take advance of fabrics by using them to renovate your furniture.

10. Use rugs and tapestries as hanging on a wall. Their color and texture are unbeatable and they improve acoustics.

Get rods that are applied on the OUTSIDE of the window area or that are very long and can be adjusted past the hooks. Then you can put the curtains up, but have them cover the wall to either side of the windows, making them seem bigger.

Consider sheers for the windows? Or find something like we have, a nice floral on a colored background, but all of the colors are kind of muted, kind of one with the creamy colored background.

I know you didnt ask, but consider yellow walls? Ours are the lightest yellow with a touch of brown in the paint, to make the walls an almost 'natural' yellow, never bright. They make the house bright, welcoming, and they go with everytyhing. Then we have bright white chair rails etc. (Watch Father of the Bride with Steve Martin, that's where we got the idea for our look, only not so yellow.)

For our den, we painted the same yellow. Then we mixed a can of the same yellow we used on the rest of the house..with a touch more brown. Then we sponge painted all over with a real sea sponge. It's AMAZING. We get compliments on it all the time.

Good luck and happy decorating!

Red or a variation of red/orange is definitely the color...it is the compliment to green. I would go with a topper that is swagged on both sides, maybe longer on one side than the other. I'd never close the curtains though. Also think about introducing aromatherapy into your room for relaxing and comfortable aromas. This really adds to the ambiance of the room. Something fresh and earthy like rosemary. Found at my website.

White or off-white or ivory drapes or very very light ochre. You can accent these with your favorite color in the room (if you want- I wouldn't).
Whites have the added advantage of making small windows appear larger This might also be a nice concession to your husband's taste while doing well with your colors, at the same time.
