A field engineer is one who travels to visit customers at their own place of business or where they are working. This could be in the same country or abroad.
This is opposed to an "in house" engineer who doesn't normally leave the office or lab where he or she works.

Land surveying is field engineering of sorts. I'm sure that there are other fields. Environmental, Geological, etc.

in my opinion engineering means how to do works that have great efficiency or best method to do work so that we consider technological aspect , economical aspect and enviromental aspect.
