I guess that's just a tradition.
The country was indeed founded largely on "Judeo-Christian" ideas, because that was the background most people had at the time of the revolution. True, many of the Founding Fathers were not "Christians" in the way we think - they were "deists" - but even the ones who rejected revealed religion (like Jefferson) still had at their basic core a fundamental belief in the tenets of Christianity. Even Jefferson said "I am a Christian."

America was founded on hypocrisy which is why it's taken this long to get the Constitution to apply to all citizens, not just white male Christian ones. The same applies to the blue laws that are finally being pushed out of our laws.
