Actually truth be told Zwigger you very misinformed about the statistics in both countries. I compare the two countries in answering my question because you base your questions on a comparison of the two. Canada is a wonderful country and our health care system allows health care for every Canadian regardless of their ability to pay. You keep mentioning wait times, but at least you are taken care of whereas in the USA if you can't pay you don't get care. We have a health care system which is envied by many countries including your own. As for Quality of life Canada is ranked as the 3rd best country in the world to live whereas the USA falls into 6th position. Vancouver is ranked as the 3rd best city in the WORLD for quality of life. I think that should be enough to prove our quality of life.

I used your website provided on aids in Canada and compared them with a government site on American aids stats and this was the result. This is a quote from the website you posted.
"The number of people with HIV/AIDS is now about 58,000 -- 0.2 percent of the population" (Canada)http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060731/wl_canada_nm/canada_aids_canada_col
This is a quote from the website below. "In 2006, more than 1 million persons are living with HIV/AIDS in the United States, and an estimated 40,000 new HIV infections are expected to occur this year. The incidence of Aids in the USA is .06% of the population. http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5521a1.htm
Compare the statistics: The incidence of Aids in the USA is .06% of the population. As a matter of fact it is higher becasue anyomous or home tests are not in included in the U.S. stats and confidential name based reports have not been implemented by all states
http://www.avert.org/america.htm
The incidence of aids in Canada is .02% of the population and in the US .06%..
Therefore the stats show that The U.S.A. has three times as many cases of aids per capita than Canada.
In Canada Aids patients recieve free medical care and treatment. The reason the issue is in the media is because the government is stepping up it's efforts in education and in combatting the issue. If you look at the last website I listed you will see that it is rising faster in the States than here. Keep in mind as well that the actual number of cases in the US are between 1,039,000 to 1,185,000 because the US stats does not include anonymous or home tests and confidential name based reports are not implemented by all states yet.

The stats you used the last time you asked the question about Canada's suicide rate and which you judge your findings were from the 1990's, and you only included one age group. When you total all age groups and compare them there is only a .9% difference between the USA and Canada. http://www.suicidology.org/displaycommon...
http://www.statcan.ca/daily/english/0506...
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query...
There is only a difference of .9 % between the two countries. ( less than 1 % ) Our gun related suicides has dropped drastically since the gun regulations were put in place.
The stats alone verify our quality of life, definately not third world, and definately higher than the US. our health care system speaks for itself. And your stats prove that Canada's suicide rate is barely higher than your countries. And you have proved to us that Canada's rate of Aids is 1/3 that of your country. Yes, I'd say we have earned the right to say that we have a beautiful way of life.

Added on August 3rd:

As I said the stats speak for themselves and are no where as high as you state. Suicides in Canada are only 9/10% of a percent higher than the states. ( less than one percent.)
Aids in Canada is .2% of the population, in the USA .6% of the population. USA has three times as many aids cases per capita.
And Canada is rated three positions in the stats ahead of the USA for standard of living. Your comments are grossly incorrect.

I am an American living in Canada, and I can tell you that your information is terribly flawed.

Canada's health care is at least available to everyone, which in the US it is not. Many people in the US don't go to the doctor until a disease or ailment or condition has reached a more advanced state, because of lack of insurance, thus ending up causing more distress and costing more money in the long run.

Canada's view on illegal drugs is far more advanced than the U.S.'s "war on drugs" that is failing miserably.

Canada is anything BUT a third world nation, and I would rate the quality of life in Canada above that in the U.S., even though the cost of living is higher. The standard of living is NOT lower than in the U.S. despite the higher cost. Canadians may do without some things Americans don't, but it's more a lifestyle thing. Shiopping isn't as much a recreational activity, which in my opinion is a good thing. There is more focus on family, sports, outdoor activities, and cultural communities.

Maybe you oughta move here and see for yourself. Though, wiht your attitude, it would be like trying to show a blind and deaf man a good movie.

I personally don't feel that this article is 100% accurate. While I agree that HIV/AIDS numbers may be up, it's up worldwide, not purely in Canada.

In 2001 I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder (type 2). I wound up having to quit my job, and drop out of school (these were doctors orders) as I was sick and could not handle any stress. I almost immediately was able to get into a psychiatrist who really was a god send. He works for the Alberta health care system, so his services are free to those who need it.

After being diagnosed I was put on several different medications, sometimes costing over $1000 a month. The medications that I am currently taking cost about $700 a month. The health care system here pays for it, because I could not afford not only the medications, but doctors bills as well. If I lived in the U.S., and did not have insurance, I'd be screwed. I wouldn't be able to pay for those things because I'd be too sick to work. I'd probably be homeless.

All in all, a public health care system is not a perfect model, but I know first hand what it can do and I think in a lot of ways it saved my life. Sometimes people have to wait a little bit longer to see a specialist or have surgery, but if the doctor thinks it's serious, you always are able to get help from a specialist quickly.

Both the private and public health care systems have positives and negatives, but in my case I'm grateful for our health care system.

Aids is on the rise the world over and here in Canada it is no exception. As far as suicide rates increasing, statistics can be misleading. To prove that point, the next time one of your politicans spews out new job numbers, try to find out how many jobs were lost during that same period. They only use the numbers to support their argument. As afar as our health care system. Yes, we are proud of the fact that NO ONE is turned away from recieving treatment, even our poor and if your child has a life threatening illness here, they are treated without you ending up in the poorhouse. No country or system is perfect by any means, but for a country to look after it's neediest people, speaks volumes, not dollars and cents.

As a Canadian, I wonder where you obtain your inaccurate conclusions. If you check with the UN statistics, Canada has rated higher than the US and most of the countries of the world in terms of health care, education, welfare, infrastructure and standard of living. The Yahoo article was about AIDS for which, at this time, there is no cure, anywhere. You used this one article on AIDS in order to come to some from illogical conclusions.

I am a Canuck and have NO idea what you talking about.
I found a lump on my body last weekend, called my doctor on Monday, got into to see him that day and had an ultrasound on Thursday.
I paid nothing. I cannot understand how this is "3rd world".
Maybe you need to have a visit to Canada to see firsthand.

Whatever hm-mm let me think 3 rd world my butt. In your country there are people going without health care because they can not afford it . Oh and if you need a surgery some have to mortgage etc to have it. Sounds great to me only the rich can afford medical care in the U.S . So I bet aids etc is higher there.
