I'm Presbyterian and we rule by majority. Our Pastor encourages open discussion (not belligerence, however) as a means to understanding all sides of the discussion.

A lot of this has to do with the history of the religion and our church in particular.

i am spiritualist and as such we aren't preached to , we have a lovely service that often consists of spirit philosophy or an address given by a guest speaker
we are told always that we do not have to accept all that has been said if it doesn't agree with our own thinking
and by all means after the service have a discussion on the service and disagreements are fine
we are given whats called the 7 principles , like a moral code
we try to live by these as spiritual people
the link below will show you the 7 principles

I think intelligent discussion is probably the better option as it means that people are actively thinking about their faith, beliefs and religion. After all God gave us free will!

I used to go to church when I was younger, and I took my love of God very seriously. I had been baptized when I was a baby, because my mother didn't want me to go to hell if something bad happened to me while I was little, but when I was 15.. I got myself baptized again.. under my own belief and love.

I took classes to confirm my beliefs.. and to learn all that I could. And amongst all the members of my Church.. I declared my love for God, and for Jesus and his teachings.

As I grew a little older, and understood more things. I came to realize that I was in a Church full of Hypocrites. The man in front of me sold drugs, the woman beside me was having an affair.. etc.. and I abhored those people.. and the church that I had Joined.

I told my mother that I didn't want to be part of it anymore. So, I sat down with her.. and we talked.. I came to learn that my family was amongst a group of people who talked about religion.. who discussed possibilites and their opinions.

Here I had been the passive follower... a sheep amongst the herd.. and my parents left me to follow the dream I had wanted.. Until the day came when I had awoken from the fog and realized that all is not as it seems to be..

To this day.. we discuss things. We have conversations about things pertaining to religion. We still believe in God.. and the love of Jesus.. but we have our own conclusions that we were drawn too. And I couldn't be happier to sit down with my friends and have heated discussions about Religion and it's teaching..

I think that in order to understand and be understood.. you have to speak your mind... not follow blindly.. as a sheep amongst wolves.
