It needs to be short. You can use gel, but don't use one with alcohol because they not only smell bad, but they also damage your hair.

What I would really reccomend is a pomade -- it's a wax that holds your hair in place. They make your hair look less gross, but help you achieve that look. Since pomade is made out of oils and waxes, it helps your hair look better when you don't spike it by nurturing it as well.

A: Generally, a hairstyle is “spiky” because it has either A) been styled to be spiked, or B) been cut in such a way that the hair stands on its own. The latter is only possible

first it helps if u have it cut the right way to b able 2 spike it, then it depends on what kind of spikes ur taking about, like punk spikes or just the very front or the top of head, would depend on what u use , for very front or top of head, u can use a firm gel , if its the punk spikes ,like liberty spikes and stuff like that, the got 2 b glued, knox gelatin, with water and put it atthe base of where ur spiking, bed head has a mohawk gel that would work good and lots of hair spray

My hair defies gravity. All I have to do is run my hands through my hair once and it stays up, and then push it back down once to make it stay down. It's like their wires, yet it still feels soft, it's weird. My point is, if I want to style my hair, I don't need product, so I can't help you here.
