Canoes float in salt water too.
It doesn't need an engine to be a boat.
A canoe is a boat.
Too small to be a ship.

Absolutely! A boat is any small, open vessel, propelled by oars or sail. A motor boat is propelled by a motor. A raft is not an open vessel, so it isn't a boat.
A ship is any seagoing vessel of considerable size, whether propelled by sail or by motor.
And the person who makes the canoe go is a paddler, not a rower.
Rowers use oars, whether they are in rowboats, sculls or skiffs. There's an easy way to remember that -- rowers go through life backwards, paddlers are always looking ahead.
A kayak is a type of canoe, as is an outrigger.
And now you have passed canoe 101 ...... Have fun out there, and keep the open side up.
