Oh man...that is SO old. A carpenter uses tools, right? A hammer and saw are tools. So when he gathered his hammer and "saw", he could now "see". Get it?

It's a play on the words 'see' and 'saw'. I think the statement can be used to show ambiguity in words. Researching this wasn't though. At first I thought it was talking about someone who says they understand, but their understanding was meaningless because they lacked understanding (blind), but I was reading too much into it.

It's just mean to make you think. "The blind man picked up his hammer and saw". Is 'saw' the tool? Or is saw the verb as in, to see?

I really don't think it means anything at all.

It's similar to this statement:
"He saw that gas can explode"
which if you consider will find that it has multiple meanings.

Carpenter cant see

Hammer is a carpenters tool
and so is a SAW

But the Pun (play on words) is SAW for its a carpenters tool and to be able to see something or " i saw that" means you have to see....
