This is an interesting observation.

We are now taught - I'm not sure how long - at least since the 1970s or 80s that a man crossing his legs is gay. It is considered feminine.

How did this come about? My Dad (born in the south in the late 1920s) crossed his legs and he certainly wasn't homosexual. Many southern men cross their legs at the knees - at least older ones.

If you know something about gay culture you know that there are those who try really hard to look like women. And, women cross their legs so you can't look up their skirts. That's a fact, in case you don't wear skirts it remains a problem for short skirts if you're sitting in public - unless you have beautiful underwear you want to show off. Many women cross their legs even in pants by habit.

If you know something of the history of gay culture - New Orleans gays, at least those aspiring to be women, are very southern in mannerisms which New Orleans as a whole was not (pre-Katrina).

When homosexuality was less well accepted in places like north Mississippi and north Louisiana and Arkansas, then homosexual men from these parts sometimes went to New Orleans for "safety" as well as to live out their preferred lifestyle.

I think these southern men constituted the cultural basis of New Orleans gay culture. There are just bunches of southern mannerisms among the gays in New Orleans. In New Orleans I can mostly tell who's gay and perhaps in Montreal too.

But, move to Mississippi or Arkansas and you will see almost ALL men look gay. And, I don't think all these men are gay or bisexual though some, of course, are. Hence, my theory of an overlap between gay culture and southern culture.

I am almost half a century old, so I remember when I was a kid the men all crossed their legs like that, but women didn't. It was considered improper for a woman to cross her legs. Women all wore dresses then and not pants, so that may have had something to do with it. I grew up when our moms were all like June Cleaver. (-:

I did this before it was a thing.....and my Mom would tell me that it looked gay...I had to agree with her so me being oh so very straight..I crossed my leg how my Pa does. I catch myself doing it both ways nowadays and I really don't think anyone gives a flip..like having a an ear-ring use to mean somethingone on what ear it was in..now..mean's almost nothing..just fashion.

I would think Gay, especially if he's carrying a man-purse....the reason it's different for a man to sit cross-legged is that it's supposed to be uncomfortable for them. Woman don't have a penis or testicles to crush when they sit that way, but men do. thats why most sit with legs wide apart....

You must have sat before a guy opposite to him, wearing a mini skirt and wearing nothing underneath, making him corss his legs at the knee. This may be the reason for you to ask this question. Am I right?

i like the look. adult males who take a seat like that tend to be greater sophisticated in terms of style, greater stylish and greater state-of-the-artwork, that are all pluses. you will on no account see a thug with disgustingly over-sized clothing sitting like that. and people who call it gay are merely immature. interior the genuine expert international, adult males take a seat like this each and all of the time with their costly suits and thousand greenback footwear.
