I try not to think about it, but when it's dark in the room, I almost frantically rush to the light switch to turn it on because I suspect, for instance, that there are robbers behind the shower curtain.
How can I stop bein gafraid of the dark?

1) put the crack pipe down.

2) get some sleep.

3) trust that if all doors and windows are locked, no robbers will get in.

4) sit in the dark for a very long time, with a cell phone if it makes you feel better, until you realize that no one's in your house but you

and the boogey man..

I admit that I couldn't sleep in the dark till I was fifteen years old. One night, it just went away. But maybe that will happen for you.

If not, you can always work your way up to not fearing the dark by taking small steps. You could start by just closing your eyes for certain amount of time and work your way up to a longer period. Easy? Then go into a room during the day and pull the shade only slightly to only obscure the light a bit. Repeat till you feel comfortable. Then progressively pull it down a bit more each time, only proceeding when you feel absolutely comfortable.

A lot of therapists use this method of acclimatizing. You take baby steps towards your goal till the fear goes away.

If it is severe and self-therapy doesn't work, I suggest you see a specialist who can guide you personally.

Go into is slowly. Don't go straight to having darkness immediatly, try having a couple of lamps in the room. Turn them on before you turn the main light off. sit down on the bed, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths, don't think about anything but keep positive thought that there is nothing but you in the room. when you feel relaxed, open your eyes and turn one of the lamps off, again, go back to the bed and sit down and repeat the deep breaths and clear thoughts that there is nothing to fear. repeat this until all the lamps are off and you can sit on your bed in the darkness without any fear. Remember to tell yourself what you already know, that there is no one else in the room. Good Luck and don't rush it, just take as much time as you need.

oh i love the darkness, its so purifying and safe. but for you i would recomend getting an adjustable lamp and every week reduce the light a little till it is almost dark enough but not too much then go with that, reducing the light verry little every 2 weeks and then put big dirty boots outside so that people will thing that a big guy lives there and a sign saying "forget the dog beware of owner" sign with a gun and mabe a gun club sticker on the windows and you will be the safest person in the world

You should start to establish a different association with the dark, than that of robbers.

Think of something you really enjoyed, a time you had a wonderful, exciting and a passionate time, get this image vividly recreated in your mind. Feel it with a high level of intensity and then go into a dark place still feeling great. wait for 5 seconds and put the light on.

repeat this pattern over and over, then start making the amount of time you spend in the dark, feeling great feelings, longer and longer, until you actually look forward to darkness.

then you will of replaced your neurological association that dark = fear with dark = GREAT!!!

Let me tell you the truth. All the people in this world are afraid of something, but mostly darkness. Even I m afraid. But i overcame my fear by putting myself in a dark room with no lights (no bulbs or any light source) and started focusing with my eyes closed on one thing tht there are no ghosts or any creature in this room to harm me. The only thing is that you should learn to meditate and gain mind control. After all when your mind controls your body, nothing is impossible.

The only way is to face it head on. Do it one step at a time. Little by little.
