interesting that the first answers here conform with the preaching in the church, who are notorious for discrediting anything that they percieve as a threat.

what i have heard about this gospel is that it is the gospel of the goddess. before the church demonised women, the female aspect of spirituality had equal footing with the male. unfortunately a few paranoid men percieved this as a threat to their authority and control, and so the goddess was written out and demonised.
i think this was also tied in with the time when the pagan religion was incorporated into christianity, so it wasn't just about women, it was about needing something in paganism to demonise it's beliefs, so people would accept christianity.
i've heard that this gospel has been found, so i guess it is a question of time before we hear the truth of it. bottom line though it has the church scared.

It was a first century pericope cooked up by the Gnostics to confuse Christians. It does not fit in the Bible.
